Editorial
Thanks, Mr. Christian, but no thanks Mr. Moore
by Richard Swanson
Sometimes the most difficult stories are
the ones which absolutely demand
writing. This is one of those stories and it
takes the form of an editorial only because
the editor is so personally involved. It is
not a pretty story, and certainly no
pleasure to write, but one which must be
written nevertheless.
It serves rto purpose to tease the-reader
with a lot of verbiage leading up to the big
punch line, so let's get to the heart Of the
story up-front.
Gene-Gabriel Moore, managing editor
of Creative Loafing, is also Michael
Christian, news editor of ETC. magazine.
This would hardly merit mention in the
NEWS except for a series of unusual, even
bizarre, events in the last two or three
weeks.
I first became aware of Mr. Moore's dual
responsibilities on a Friday afternoon
during a call from Pat Coleman, managing
editor of ETC. I had been ferrying news
releases alj over town about the upcoming
Dignity Cathedral demonstration,
including a fruitless trip out to Dutch
Valley Way. (ETC. had moved to new
offices in Little Five Points, unbeknownst
to me.) Mr. Coleman was furious over not
having been informed about the
demonstration. As it happened, my best
efforts to get the word out were
redundant, as Billie Mills, Dignity
President,! had already | spoken with
someone at ETC. about the event. .
Duringrour conversation, Mr. Coleman
informed me that "Michael Christian" was
Mr. Moore's pseudonym. I was surprised,
but remarked that the quality of news in
ETC. had vastly improved over the
previous news editor's work.
The story would have ended there,
except that Mr. Moore began to call me
and others, asking questions as "Gene-,

Creative Loafing": When subsequent
stories appeared not in Creative Loafing,
but in ETC., we became understandably
concerned.
To further complicate this peculiar
situation, Mr. Moore began soliciting my
writing for Creative Loafing. First he
expressed keen interest in a coverstory on
"Gay-bashing" which he was eager to
move on "as quickly as possible." While I
was considering that offer, Mr. Moore
telephoned again to up the ante. This time
he wanted me, to consider taking on a
regular column of news for the gay
communityrto appear weekly in Creative
Loafing. • ' ■
Not bad for the managing editor of a
small volunteer publication, but awfully
strange coming from a man who also
works for ETC., a magazine that has made
no secret of its relentless animosity toward
the Atlanta Gay Center, its Board, and
volunteers. Curiouser and curiouser.
Shortly after our last Conversation and
agreement to meet to discuss these offers,
Mr. Moore apparently got wind of the fact
that several people at the Center were
aware of his secret identity as Michael
