FLOWERS AND GEMS.
I.
There are beautiful flowers on the highway of
Life,
Which blossom and fill sincere hearts with
joy ;
Sweet buds to be gathered and cherished for
aye,
W’hose delicate fragrance Age cannot de-
stroy.
But choose not the gaudies flowers that bloom
ForHoften ; ney brighten [but one summer
day;
With our butterfly friends they help us kill
time,
And aslspeedily pass from our lives, away.
11.
There are beautiful gems to be sought and
found
In wonderful store-houses Nature provides;
Whose lustre will brighten as years steal away,
With the friction of Time, and motion of
tides;
The pearl seeker dives for an unlovely shell,
Knowing not if the jewel expected is there,
The miner bores patiently thro’ the brown
rocks
Containing those exquisite beauties, so rare.
111.
There are costlier gems by our daily paths,
Encased, like the pearl, in a hard shell or
crust;
And flowers more choice than the florist e’er
grew,
Laid low, ’neath the wheels of Despair in the
dust.
Some, victims of sorrow, of want, vice or
crime;
All needing assistance and kind words of
cheer;
Frail ,human plants, swayed by each rude
blast,
Rough, unpolished treasures, to some hearts
so dear.
