THECUPOF LIFE.
i.
She had not asked the doubtful gift
That brings us toil, and care, and pain—
The burdens that we scarce can lift,
Or, lifting, may not lose again.
11.
But they, whose handshad held the cup,
Whose lips knew its deceptive wine—
Beyond the first scarce tasted sup,
False as its foam’s deceitful shine —
HI.
They pressed it to her helpless lip,
And bade her drink the bitter draught,
Nor heeded that her salt-tears’ drip
Would mingle with it as she quaffed!
IV.
In roadways rough and briar strewn
They set her tender little feet —
Fit but to walk through happy June,
In gardens bright ’mid blossoms sweet.
V.
A load whose weight they could not tell,
They gave her, though she shrank in pain,
Then scorned her when she, stumbling, fell,
And had not strength to rise again.
Beth Day.
