-£~= LONGING.
BY LOUELLA LORIMER.
Oh! heart, weary heart, would you call
From the dear, the sweet sunny past,
Pictures that sleep ’neath memory’s pall,
As a balm of relief and of rest?
As you pause on the brink of despair,
Too weak to push back the veil
That has long disclosed only care
And struggles begun but to fail,
Weary heart, all bleeding and torn,
Is there naught that the future can give?
No ray of light like the morn,
To bid you look upward and live?
Fond hopes that lie buried in ashes
Os bitter regret, shame and tears,
And sorrows that flocded the lashes
Like billows on storm-ridden seas!
Though faint with sad thoughts of the night,
Slip away from your burden of care,
And, back to the past all alone
Steal on, forgetting despair.
There, a-down the rose-hidden by-way,
So fresh, so fair, and so sweet,
Are the prints made on one summer day
By your happy and restless young feet.
The flowers, like those that you gathered
When life was all roseate and bright,
Still bloom; and their fragrance is dearer
For the rain and the dews of the night.
Just here is the soul’s trysting-place,
Where sweet forget-me-nots grow,
And the spirit may gather and trace
Pictures of the dear long ago.
And hark! o’er the mist-covered hills
Comes wafted an anthem free;
Burdened with love, it trembles and thrills,
With a childish faith in Thee.
Oh Christ, oh home, oh love, oh soul,
Beyond the grave is peace
And love and rest for weary ones
Where earthly sorrows cease.
