For Woman’s Work.
YeflDcuw Vn®ta§o
*IT\\EAR VIOLETS! sweet heralds of the spring,
Blossoming where the sunbeams fall,
Memories of the past around you cling,
And other days, and other scenes recall,
When earth seemed only made for violets,
And all sweet Howers, not for sad regrets.
Os days when skies were azure blue,
When breezes whispered in the dell,
When hopes seemed real, and all things true,
I sought you in the nook I know so well,
Not dreaming, as I culled my flowers,
That earth for me had darker hours.
Violets! oh, pure, sweet violets!
Golden as those of other years,
Reminding me of days I would forget,
When sunshine changed to bitter tears.
The faint, sweet odors that ye shed,
Tell of the past, and of the dead.
Dead! yet violets bloom not above them,
Lost, and to me only—passing strange;
Forget those days, and that we loved them,
On life’s rough journey, strangers, world of change;
It tells of other years—each violet—
I’ll hide them tenderly, and then forget. Alice M. Hale.
For Woman’s Work.
A Beautiful Letter.
WHEN the mail was brought into my busy office this afternoon,
I glanced first at the letters, next at the expected guests (the
papers for which I subscribe) and then I took a look at the “unex
pected guests” (sample copies.) One of the latter was Woman’s
Work for October, 1901 —the “Poetry Issue.” When Iwas tearing off
the wrapper I thought to find one of the “advertising mediums” that
flood the country, carrying along a little fiction for the sake of ap
pearances —but imagine my surprise and delight when I found a strict
ly up-to-date and—to me —new Southern magazine.
I read every page, and it seems like an old friend. I enjoyed it
so much that I enclose pay for my subscription, and don’t think I
will ever be without it again. Many familiar names greeted me as I
turned the pages, and, best of all, I found a picture of our dear Mag
gie Richard: her face is perfect—my ideal face, so full of nobilitv,
purity and truth. I can easily understand how a woman with a face
like that could write “Folded Hands,” the first poem (after the dedi
cation) in her charming little book, “Gleanings From The Wayside,”
which she sent me several years ago.
It were fitting indeed that one whom our angel Dolores loved so
dearly, should write such a sweet tribute to her poetic genius. “In
the dear, dead days, long past beyond recall,” Dolores’s bright, witty
letters brightened maijy hours for me; hers was a pure, sweet life,
full of true womanliness and lofty ideals. I count my friendship
with her as among the truest, noblest memories that hallow my past.
She is in Heaven, gone to the mother for whom her soul yearned, but
I feel that her spirit is with us, and the many lovely lessons taught
by her life and writings cause us to appreciate her memory—to be
glad that “o’er the sea of silence” our souls met hers, and gained high
est inspiration from the meeting.
Leila Mae Wilson, you are an Alabamian, and I extend to you the
hand of literary fellowship. Your verses clipped from the dear old “Sun
ny South” (in the days when “Meh Lady,” “Empress Josephine” and
our lovely little “Duchess Mahoney” ruled right royally over us as
household children) fill a large part of my scrap books. Your poem be
ginning: “Pitiless, pitiless clods of the Earthland,” is the sweetest
thing, on that theme, in our language—its sad, minor chords tug at
my heartstrings. I have heard “Pitiless, pitiless clods of the Earth
land” fall on my dearest beloved—my parents, and a sweet young
sister —and I can “clasp hands in the sisterhood of sorrow.”
Strange in how many literary “Little Rooms” we are meeting,
since we first met at Meh Lady’s fireside in “Sunny South.” We
met in Lee’s Texas Magazine, The Atlanta Review, the dear old Bo
hemian, and now I am asking to meet with you (to, as Browning
would say, “Join hands in frantic sympathy”) in “Woman’s Work.”
My life is a busy one: the best magazines and papers from all over
our country and the countries beyond the sea, come regularly to my
tables and desk —but there is always a place for, and lean always find
time to read, a magazine of the tone of this one that paid me such a
cheering visit this afternoon —dear, bright “Woman’s Work.”
