I y | -^■L- The songs of birds were all around, | f All new things were new pleasures found, I All thought of care in work was drowned, I Sweet songs from Nature did resound, I |-y My soul was gaily pleased withal; '/p ‘ My joys, as fast they gladly spread, fL / Came back to me to make their bed, | Z X-Jxi For worry, care, and strife were fled; — | j ■ My work was prosp'rous. As ’tis said, — If He well who works at Nature’s call. II in. My life is like the Autumn fields " ’ Which ripe the Summer’s prosp’rous growth; i ' For Spring doth sow and Summer toil, * ’ But princely Autumn harvests both. ’I is not a harvest strangely great Qf Northern wheat beneath the snow, Nor think the flowers less complete, Ihus giv’n to me by kindly fate, Wrapped warm in such embrasure strange Because life’s wars have left their thought But one I feel is strangely sweet; To f ee i jjg pulseless thrill and glow. Enfurrowed deep on what they wrought. For steadfast friends mature their love ’Twill be a calm and peaceful rest, — A heav’nly Spring, in splendor meet, And kindly lift my soul above, Os w hat Earth has it is the best; — Will melt the snow in every place, And make it glow with joy replete. p or though my sun climb down the West, And life will bloom with newer grace IV.
