For Woman’s Work.
TIME.
rjn AVE you ever been asked to do something that you felt reason-
LTTI ably certain would be helpful to others, but refused because
you were “too busy?”
The Manager of Woman’s Work asked me in his very nicest way
to contribute this year to the magazine; but, thinking of numerous
household duties, care of a dear one in practically a helpless condi
tion, writing for several magazines and children’s publications, in
addition to looking after a book and publishing business, I promptly
said: ‘‘l cannot undertake it!”
Several weeks later this thought presented itself: “The Manag
er probably would not have asked for the articles if he had not want
ed them, and the fact that he desired them might reasonably be taken
as evidence that he believed they would be more or less helpful to at
least some of his readers!”
That was enough: my duty was clear. The thought was parent
to the act. The magazine shall have for the coming year what is re
quired at my hands, and I hope you will like the simple talks, the
words of cheer which I shall have for you from month to month.
Every moment devoted to this service will be to me like stepping
aside from the beaten path to plant a flower; if, perchance, a simple
blossom shall be dropped into your life, driving away despondency,
filling your days with rare fragrance and golden sunlight, surely the
recompense will be more than adequate!
We may all find time (if we will) for the things we should do, by
refraining from idle talk, from the reading of sporting news, and
criminal reports to which our daily papers devote far too much space
and we too much time, by retiring a trifle later now and then, arising
a few minutes earlier, concentrating more earnestly upon the things
worth while, jotting down helpful thoughts for the perusal of others
as we ride to and from business, all of these requiring little of our
time and strength, but meaning perhaps so much to the discouraged.
Indeed.it is unnecessary to go to distant city or far country to do good.
One’s business or profession need not be sacrificed that one may lift the
fallen, relieve the destitute, or carry sunshine to the despondent.
If you have a gift, whether of tongue, pen, brush, song, or what
not, you can afford to be generous with it- You may always spare
the time to speak pleasantly and encouragingly to the members of
your household, and to the hopeless ones whom you meet in your
daily life. You may spare ten or fifteen minutes to write a bright,
cheering letter to another who is in trouble. You may paint a pansy
or a bit of landscape for one who is homesick for the green fields of
the country. Ycu may comfort with sweet, simple melody the dear
old man or woman with only sad dreams of the past for company,
and you may spare the time to look up now and then from the book
in which you are so deeply absorbed, or to get out of yourself for a mo
ment and gladden those about you with a radiant smile. There is
always time to help humanity in its upward march.
It is the fussy, flurrying, worrying, seemingly busy person who has
no time for the real things of life, while the truly busy one call always
find a moment or an hour for something more. Time devoted entire
ly to self produces little or no pleasure, but if given for the happiness
of others it seems to multiply itself, and brings to its possessor many
joys which all the gold of this world cannot purchase.
