CARE OF COOKING UTENSILS.
IF a knife used to cut onions retains the
odor of the vegetable, take it into the
back yard and run it into the earth tev
eral times. Most housekeepers have a sepa
rate stewpan for cooking onions, since
more or less of their pungency is apt to
linger about a dish in which they have
been boiled unless, as is too seldom the
case with the dishwasher, especial care is
taken in their cleansing. A supply of sal
seda near at hand will stimulate the maid’s

UTILITY boxes are now recognized as
being almost as necessary as a bureau
in the house. The meet expensive are
covered with leather and used in hall or
library. The woman who is proficient in
the delightful art of wood carving may
have an attractive chest in her dining
room for table linen. If she be a bride,
she may have one in her boudoir that will
be lined with white satin and be called her
“dower box,” holding the lingerie of her
trousseau. In the bedroom the b. xis cov

furnishings, and neatly lined with cam
bric with a sachet pad covering the bot
tom. In this, shirtwaists are kept free
from dust and wrinkles, and if the room is
large enough there may be a skirt box to

BENEFIT OF A SPONGE BATH.
A PROMINENT physician, speaking
of special baths and their uses, men
tions the sponge bath—the form of bath
ing where the water is applied to the
surface through the medium of cloth or
sponge, no part of the body being plunged
in the water. He says the practice ot sys
tematic daily sponge bathing is one giving
untold benefit to its followers. Let a per
son not very strong, subject to frequent
colds from slight exposure, the victim of

WASHING WOOLENS.
TH E following method of cleansing wool
ens without shrinking is recommend
ed: Provide a generous allowance of hot
soft water, white castile, ivory, or other
pure soap, and borax. Have the washing
and rinsing waters of about the same de
gree of heat. Make a good suds for the
first water, but on no consideration put
soap on the soiled article itself. Have the
water as hot as the hands can bear com
fortably, and allow one level teaspoonful
of powdered borax for every gallon of wa
ter; immerse the clothes and allow them
to stand ten or fifteen minutes before wash
ing, then work them up and down, squeeze,
and if necessary rub with the hards, but
never on a washboard. The water must
be squeezed, not twisted out, consequently
a wringer is better than the hands.
Rinse through two waters, using a little
less borax and no soap, but allowing the
clothes to lie ten minutes in each, work
ing them up and down, and squeezing

ambition to keep her utensils clean, since
it readily softens extranecus matter, sav
ing time and effort, besides serving as a
deodorizer. Custards or any other dish
with milk as a foundation readily absorb
the flavor left by the cooking of pungent
vegetables. A double boiler and a baking
dis h should be set aside for such purposes
and employed in no other way. It is at
tention to these small details that is to a
large degree accountable for the reputa
tion of good cooking.
hold the dainty thin gowns that are likely
to look unkempt if kept in a crowded
clothes closet. If furnished with springs
in the lid, a heavy box of good siza serves
as a bed when a thin mattress is placid
over the springs. Such a couch covered
with corduroy or velour, and supplied with
a generous number of pretty cushions adds
considerably to the furnishing of any bed
room, as well as supplying a dust-proof
receptacle for seldom worn clothing. Two
shirtwaist box->s with cushions galore form
an attractive cozy corner in a girl’s room,
and if one has a tray fitted in, ribbons,
stocks, collars and belts may be kept with
the waists. These boxes should be mount
ed on casters so as to be easily moved when
sweeping.
chronic catarrh, sore throat, etc., begin the
practice of taking a sponge bath every
morning, commenciag with tepid water in
a warm (not hot) room, and following the
sponging with friction that will produce a
warm glow over the skin, and then take a
five minutes brisk walk in the open air. One
will then be likely to have created a good
appetite for breakfast. After having used
tepid water for a few mornings, lower the
. temperature of the bath until cold water
’ can be borne with impunity.
After wringing, pull into shape and dry
as quickly as possible, pulling out at least
twice during the process of drying. Wool
ens must never be hung in hot sunshine to
dry, nor out of doors in freezing weather.
In winter, dry on clothes-bars, standing
the latter over a furnace register or near
the kitchen range.

NEW METHODOF REDUCING FAT.
A news item from Paris informs us that
the American metbed of producing a slim,
trim figure, is meeting with astonishing
success. This system, which has made such
a wonderful impression there, must
be the Marmola Prescription Tablet meth
od of reducing fat. It is safe to say that
we have nothing better for this purpose in
this country. Anythirg that will reduce
the excess flesh a pound a day without in
jury to the stomach, the causing of wrink
les, the help of exercising or dieting, or
interference with one’s meals, is a mighty
important and useful addition to civiliza
tion’s necessities. Just such a catalogue
of good results, however, follow the use of
these pleasant, harmless and economical
little fat reducers. We say economical,
because Marmola Prescription Tablets
(made in accordance with the fam ius pre
scription) can be obtained of any druggists,
or the makers, the Marmola C ~ Dept.
106, Detroit, Mich., for seventy-five cents
the large case, which is a decidedly eco
nomical price, considering the number of
tablets each case contains.
