THE ECONOMY OF WMSTE. *T*HE haunting fear of poverty,” “a concession to the necessity for thrift,” two people described an attic of accumulated waste. One day a brave soul took an inventory of that attic. Two mahog any chairs were refinished to renew their elegance in the living room. Anything else capable of regeneration, but not desirable for the house, was carried away to a rummage sale for the church, there to serve out Christian uses, or sold to a second-hand man for a little money (a very little, but enough for a necessary stamp or a loaf of bread). “And yet,” said the Reformer of the attic, “every piece that went out of my possession was followed out of the house and into the wag on by the thought that if John’s business should fail that piece might have been utilized in our ‘rooms to let.’ ” The old attic stuff became a mascot. To work decisively for its extermination was to bring destruction upon that home. We have all had the feeling. It requires judgment to select the thing that is really waste. And it requires strength of mind and conviction to condemn anything that has ever “belonged” and been paid for in good money. Indeed, the economy of waste is a difficult subject to broach, because it is only the woman brim full of the saving sense who ought to listen to such anarchism at all. One of the things for the housewife to learn is just how many outlets there may be for the waste that piles up in her business. Old papers and magazines bring forty-five cents for the hundred pounds. “Why, our closets are full of them. They crowd everything else out. But lam afraid to destroy them for fear we might want to re fer to them sometime.” If you live in the country where there is no adequate library, that may be true of critical magazines and reviews. But for that matter, if you live in the country there will be no one to give you silver for paper. In the city, however, it is well to have a box into which may be thrown the “popular” magazines, which you will not need again, (nave the courage to believe it) and the newspapers, two or three a day (how they do pile up, and what ashes at a dollar and a half a load have to be carried away partly because of them). A dollar or so next spring, with something for the old rubbers will just keep that week’s grocery bill from going beyond the limit set.
