For Woman’s Work. “BY CANDLELIGHT.’’ tirxBJKCTS seen by candlelight do not look the same by day!” quoted a friend, refer ring to a very pretty girl whose career we were dis cussing. “Did you ever see her in negMgee? Curl-papers, hair untidy, soiled and ragged silk waist, spotted skirt?” To how many of my readers could this descrip tion apply? If not in all particulars, in which de tail? Is there any excuse : any one of these particulars? Curl-papers and untidy hair belorg in the privacy of one’s own room, there to bs removed and remedied as speedily as pos sible. With the modern contrivances for quick curling of the hair, why torment the family and disfigure one’s self with the slow process of curl papers, wiggles, pins, etc ? A girl with part of her hair in pa pers, and the rest in disarray is mDst unat tractive—as her own mirror will testify. As for old finery! Give it away as soon as its appropriate use'ulness for you has passed; or sell it to the old-clothes man; or cut it up for fancy work, crazy quilts, portieres of ribbon; or hoard it away in the attic if ycu have any sentiment for a certain garment. Don’t, don’t wear it around the house in the mornings! Every tear and spot will be emphasized in the relentless glare of the morning light, and the garment will look too tawdry and cheap for words to For Woman’s Work. LON FLY? Yes, indeed, far from the friends of other days, how many a time comes to mind the poet’s mourn ful line, “Lonely I feel.” A woman with little children clustering about her said to me, she had often walked, when very tired, a mile and a half to her near est neighbor, she felt so lonely. In reading Woman’s Wokk, especial ly the editorials, I have often wished that all lonely women might have this magazine, and that those who have it would re-read it sufficiently to let it fill and guide and satisfy the mind that a neighbor’s chat would seem like an in terruption rather than to be sought as a relief for “loneliness.” “Cultivate a virtue if you have it not,” some ue once wrote, and wisely, For Woman’* Work. Hemming Table Cloths and Napkins. PERSONS deairing to hem napkins and other table linen by hand will find their time caved and lab?r facilitated by first removing the thread from the sewing machine and running the article through Woman’s Work. Jjfei ’i I for being lax in describe. Feminine finery, when it is too old to be sent to the cleaner’s for professional fresh ening, and too old for home cleaning and mending, has reached a state when it is manifestly unfit for further exhibition any where—even in the daily home life. In these days when a dainty, washable morning gown may be made at a cost of a dollar, may be purchased ready made for little m< re than that sum, why wear such garments that an unconventional caller is the signal for a “grand scramble” into pre sentable apparel? Some things improve with age, but— not old clothes. Beware of. the pernicious influence of wornout finery! It undermines one’s per sonal self-respect. It is often the first step to permanent carelessness and untidiness. We are creatures of habit, and a habit once formed may not soon be broken, no matter how strong the intention. Jankt Swxet. LONELY. tco Cultivate the habit, the power to enjoy and be benefited by reading the thoughts of others who have leisure to think., besides having experience and knowledge as to the best ways of train ing children, and making home happy. Even a common weed may be utilized to cheer a fretful child, and all children love beautiful flowers. Diversion is often better than medi cine. A grandmother said of a child, “If she thought herself unwell I only had to speak of taking a walk, and she felt quite well enough to put on her best dress and go with me.” Reading takes time but it also saves time. Writing these loving words pre vents me from feeling lonely; may they serve some reader the same way is the wish of a Woman’s Work friend, Mrs. E. E. Orcutt. a hemmer of the required size, producing an even crease ready for the hand work. Hand tucks can be made in same way by putting on tucker instead of hemmer. Mbs. J. J.
