W« are constantly importuoad by our very
dear brethren of the North, East and Weet,
in the way of polite requests to give their
Prospectus, Premium List, or something else
one er more insertions, promising us some re¬
ward, such as a $20 Map (out of date), a $15
Picture, a $10 Book, a $80 Watch, or some
other unsa.eabU “ stuff,” all for a very small
■pace in our oolumns. Some of them have
the impudence to say if we will do thus and
so, we shall receive their lying sheets in ex¬
change 1 Now in reply to such dear brethren
of the quill, we say no 1 A Yankee Map, got
up within the last ten years wou d be about
as ooreect as the dispatches from the South—
«nd about as worthy of our confidence. Don’t
want your Map. As for modern Pictures, they
are very seldom worth a nail upon which to
hang. Don’t want, your Pictures. New Books
now issued by Northern publishers are fast
degenerating into low, vulgar, obaene liters
ture, adapted only to the Northern mind, and
unfit for a gentleman’s library. Want but
few such books. A cheap Yankee watch is as
expensive and equally as useful as a dry cow!
in dead of winter.
As regards an exchange with you, we are
induced to exchauge with a few ef the more
moderate class for the sole purpose of dissem¬
inating Truth among a people lost to all the
Ckriffitjan virtue#.

The Supreme Court has decided,

other citizens of Warrenton, have ordered

to take it. Hope others will do likewise.

We have recoived a Pioture entitled
4hc “ Quack Doctor,” by H. L. Stephens,

simile of Mr. Stephens’ painting, and rep¬
resents the visit of a Rouen drake to a
sick Brahma rooster, whose wife and little
children seem very Anxious for the Doc¬

ONK NEGRO KILLED—ANOTHER
WOUNDED.
On Tuesday afternoon, while Ames’
Circus was performing near the depot, an
altercation took place between two white
men, -Robert Dudley and Obadiah Jack
■on, on one - aide, .and three negroes, Eli
Barnes, Waah Harper (better known as
Wash Pearson), and Marshall Hill, on
the other side. Some six or eight shots
wore exchanged, resulting in the death of
Wash Harper, who was shot through the
heart and died instantly. Marshall Hill
was shot through the stomach and lies in
a precarious condition. t
The jury of inquest brought in a verdict
that Harper came to his death by a pistol
shot from the hands of Eli Barnes. This
was predicated on the following facts—
one of the negro witneffes swore that
Harper was facing his antagonists when
he fell. The Surgeons swore that the ball
entered from behind, passing through the
heart, and came out jwt to the left of the
median line of the breast bone. It also
appeared in evidence that Barnes stood
immediately behind Harper, and as his
pistol went off lour times without taking
effect on hig^pntagonists, he must have
shot at random and under great excite«
ment. The evidence, however, was very
sparse, only two witnesses being sworn
besides the Surgeons, and we are sorry*
that the Coroner did not summon other
witnesses white and black, as a number
saw the whole transaction.
Wash Harper was a drunkard, a gam¬
bler and., a bully He did no work, but
drank all the liquor he could get, and
made it his business to insult white and
black, whenever he pleased. He has been
•hot several times before, and had on his
person when examined after death, the
marks of a severe castigation given him
only a few weeks ago, by one of his own
color. In this instance he met and insult¬
ed a eouplc of Caucasian youths who would
not brook it. It was purely a petsonal
matter, and though he affected to be the
bully of the negro party in this county,
there was nothing political whatever ia
the affuir.

The correspondent of the World thus
pictures Washington since the war : ,
“ These negroes b steal, *, and only * steal
(except z . murdering), , . . and , that . continually. . „
George Truman, the Maryland negro hang
ed at Frederick, for murder, May 28, stoic
the preacher’s pocket hotidkcrchiel while
engaged with him in prayer the night be
fore his execution. Stealing and lying
arc as natural to negroes os water to fish.
Citizens dry their clothes on the tops of
their houses in order to stop the negroes
from stealing them. These people have
no idea of social morality. Every black
woman on u The Island,” with only such
exceptions as ago and disease make, pros¬
titutes herself gratuitously to every solicit¬
or out of mere love of lust. The men arc
only less bad because the black women
desert them in favor of their white para¬
mours, of whom there are plenty. These
negroes, animals, irrespective of sex, herd as same
as them. Marriage Wife? has not even a name
among * means ‘a woman,
aar, dot I took up wid, down in Werginny,
when de army moved off.’ The children
all know their mothers, but no child has
yet beoa found on the Island wise enough
to know its 8wu father. As a whole, these
negroes and bawds, are a mass of thieves, murderers,
the lowest of the low and the
vilest of the vile ; they only need a year’s
residence to nullify with their ballots the
votes of W. W. Corcoran, Montgomery
Blair, Caleb Cushing, or any other good
citizen.”
Senator Sprague, who has just returned
home from the 8outh, estimates the next
cotton trop at two millions and a quarter
bales. Owing to the uncertainty of negro
labor, ithas become unprofitable to carry
on large plantations, and most of the crop
is now firnished by farms that .yield from
one to fi»e and so on up to fifty bales.—
He recouuiends a reduction of the tariff
on impoits, and that the Government take
the business of bauking into its own hands,
and lend out money accumulated in the
Treasury in such"** manner as to afford
capital for new enterprises and settle peo¬
ple everywhere to work.
