The Cow Pea a as Fertiliser for
Wlieni*
Wo have lung been satisfied ^from actu¬
al experiment, that the common cow pea
of the Southern States, when proporly
managed, afford the best and at tho same
time, the cheapest medium for the resto¬
ration of our exhausted cotton fields. Its
effects have been as lasting and as marked
upon the fertility of our soils as of clover
upon the worn and exhausted lands of
Virginia and Maryland.
The main reason why the cow pea has
uot been heretofore extensively used as a
fertilizer was owing to the fact that previ¬
ous to emancipation our planters would
Uot givo up a sufficient portion of their
lands to await the slow effects of this most
. valuable fertilizer. Now however, when
every planter has a large proportion of his
poor lands lying idle, there is no excuse
Why tho pea should not be set in every
field not absolutely necessary for corn and
cotton. • > $
Now is the best time to plant the pea,
and we. desire to givo our agricultural
friends the result of careful experiment
made by a planter in Gwinnett county to
encourage them to make similar efforts.
Our Gwinnett planter had a piece of old
exhausted land, twonty acres of which had
been lying in broom sage for a number of
years. This he broke deep with a turn
plow in the Summer, and in the succeed¬
ing Fall put in wheat. The crop, careful¬
ly measured, was a littlo less than foUr
bushels to the acre.
As soon as the wheat was out he sowed
peas at the rate of two bushels to the acre.
K «ly in October, the peas were turned
Un 'lor with a deep furrow, and in a few
y erkf * ,! Rer wheat sown and carefully
harrowed was

• except the pea, ond wo find
that in five years, with the cow pea alone,
v ihe production bos been increased ten-fold
This actual experiment speaks more for
tho pea than any argument which we could
make.
We trust some of our planting friends
will be inducod to try tho pea on the next
crop of wheat and let us know the result
of their experiment.— Chron. A: Sent.
The Kitchen Garden.
Tho principal work of the gardener, is
to protect his vegetables from the injuri¬
ous effects of exoessive heat, and from
drought. This would be best accomplish.
®d by covering tho wlbolc surface of the
ground with a mulching of straw or leaves ;
but as this is impracticable, the next best
ifixpedient is to keep the surfuco of tho
ground thoroughly pulverised. After ev¬
ery rain, pass over the surface rapidly with
a rake—tho hand rake will answer in
email gardens—tho harrow or spiked tooth
cultivator for large ones. A layer of well
pulverized soil on the surface, in virtue of
tho air entangled in it, acts as a non-con¬
ductor of heat, and keeps the lowor layers
of soil, where tho roote develop themselves,
oooL The moisture of this lower layer is
also prevented from passing to the sur*
face and evaporating, by such a layer at
the surface. Tho length of time during
which a rain bonofits plants, may be fully
doubled by working tho ground just as
soon after a shower, as it is in working or¬
der.

Irish potatoes should be dug as soon

shine on the tubers, and spread them out

winter use. Especially would wo UVge

worth trying.
