Crops, Amount of Rain Ac •
* There hus, perhaps, less rain fallen du¬
ring the spring and summer than has been
known within the same months, since
1839. 8inco January it stands as follows:
January, 3.45, inches,
February, 4.87, u
March, 8.26, «*
April, 4 27, 14
• May, 2.43, «
June, 2.39,
July, 2.60, “
August, 0.92, “ to date.
iho Aggregate 24.19, inches. During
same period fot* 1868, it rained 50.90
inches. Since the first of May, the
^ortnnt months for rain to make good
crops, it has ruined the present year, only
8.84, inches. During last year for the
•amc period it rained 13.72, inches.—
Judged by this rule the crops of corn and
cotton will both bo short the present
year. Indeed, the corn crop has been
•oriouily injurned by drouth almost ruiu
ed in eorne ecotionr, while the cotton n»o
raging better will not make on an average,
more than -i two . thirds ... , of a crop. Ibis .

and fertilisers, make the production of

Our Town.
We regret the present unfortunate con
dltion ot our municipal affairs. \\t W c >1 think • i
it 18 generally regretted by the lovers
order . • m Town, and j should u u be u speedily a \
in our
remedied.
it seems that the newly elected Board
of Commissioners decline to be inaugurat
ed, the old Board refuse to .hold over ; so
that between the two, our citizens find the
Town entirely without government.
Without intending to discuss the ques
tion M to Who ia censurable for this state
of things, which all of us deplore, we can
not refrain from giving ° ° expression r to our
regret, that the new Board —who were
duly J eleoted, 1 and whose election was the
evidence of their acceptability the ;
to peos
pie, ,.' have refused to render that service
which Was desired, , . , . the , government of
in
the Town. Outside of other considera¬
tions, it was a bad example—one which
we were not prepared for, and which we
trust will nut be imitated.
But we do say, that we ought not to be
without municipal government, simply
because of their failure to serve. As
scarce as “ freeholders” ore, we trust some
one can yet bo found eligible to the posi¬
tion, and willing to make some personal
sacrifices for the security and well being of
Sparta. There is every reason why we
should have good government at all times,
and this proposition is so self evident, we
will not argue it at all. In the past—
thanks to just ordinances and their wise
administration, wc have generally lmd the
blessing of good crdeV. Our Town has
acquired a widespread reputation for de¬
cency and morality, and these are jeopard¬
ized in a state of disorder. We have sti^
among us our wives, mothers and daugh
tors, who appeal to us at all times for or
dcrly streets and quiet homes, by day and
night. In addition we are locking for¬
ward very soon to the establishment in our
midst of two flourishing schools, from
which much good is anticipated in several
ans ^ to send ^vrr°7' hither their charges .® ni r for cdu
cation, . they Will be groatly influenced by
the kind of government 0 wo have. If
lawlessness prevails . streets, and all
in our
the crimes known to our laws go unpun
ished, they will simply choose another
place.
We have already heard that good order
tn Sparta IS rapidly degenerating. Who
ther it be truo or not at * present,'it is only
question . of „ tune. . _ Under present .
a auspi
tea it will degenerate until it becomes
discoverable, uud worse evils will foil :w
