Trade.— There seems to be a perfect
halt in business of every description, by
common consent. Merchants have al¬
most entirely stripped their shelves and
counters—or rather their customers have
douo it for them to their great gratifica¬
tion. Planters have just about enough
supplies to squeeze them through to pick¬
ing time—and now everybody waits for
the “big wagon"—tho new cotton crop.
And seeing everybody else waiting we are
waiting too, for something to turn up that
will throw an occasional dollar into our
humble sanctum.
Merchants of our leading cities—Au
gusta Savannah, Charleston, Atlanta, Bal¬
timore, New York, Boston, Philadelphia,
and everybody else who desire to share the
trade of this section ought to make their bow
to the “dear people" through the columns
of the Hancock Journal, which is, in
our opinion, the best, cheapest and most
popular newspaper now published in Geor¬
gia. Wish everybody else thought as
well of it as we do.

The Cotton Chop.— The continued
drought has injured the cotton more se¬
riously chan wo anticipated. It is open¬
ing very rapidly and picking has begun.—
The farmers complain of short liut, and
small bolls. The August crop is a failure.
The blooms very sparse, awl they fall off
after becoming bolls in ulmost every in¬
stance. Instead of two-thirds of a crop as
wo opined last week, rnauy planters say
they will not make a half crop. We think
the average will be less than two thirds,
even with good seasons aud a propitious
autumn. Fertilizers will not pay as
great a per cent, as usual, hut enough we
doubt not to encourage their continued
manufacture and sale.
