though rather hard on some of our Augus¬

question. There is a strong disposition
ou the part of planters generally to desert
their Factors, not however, before pay¬

they must meet their obligations prompt¬

‘♦Let us have Peace.” —Since the
resignation of the Board oi Commissioners
of Sparta, there has been exhibited a great
dispoiitiou on the part of some individuals
to show their utter disregard for Law and
Order in our streets. A meeting of the
citisens of the town is called for to morrow,
for tho purpose of taking the matter into
don. Let every citizen be pre

g'ad says the Augusta Chroniole to fiud
evidences of th,e highest kind of the very
great commercial prosperity ol our leading
seaport. The increase in the trade and
oommerco of Savannah since tho wur has
boon gratifying to every true Georgian.
We believo the day is not far distant when
she will proudly challenge admiration as
the queen city of the South.
Customs According to statements taken from the
office in that oity, it appears that
the gold receipt* for duties durtug the last
three months were $97,526, exceeding
those of the corresponding months of any
yesr since Savannah became a city. Con¬
it sidering that these are Summer mouths,
speaks well for the “ Forest City.”

It affords us pleasure to record the fact
that tho young men of Sparta and
have organised a Debating Club, which
will meet weekly, for the purpose of dis*>

provement.
We know of no place where there is
better ttiaterial for sUch a laudable enter
prise. Our young men are Capable
maintaining a club of this description, not
only with*credit to themselves, but with
great interest to the oitisens of our Town,
if they will occasionally have a public de
bate, Suoh a movement is auspicious of
good to our town, and wc earnestly urge
all who are not members of the club, to
become so at once, and avail themselves
of the benefits which wust*result from
reading, investigating and discussing q ues
tions which may come up.
We trust we may promise the citizens
many intellectual entertainments during
the long nights of the coming winter, in
witnessing the debates of the « Club.”—
And we trust the day is not far distant

tr'fhe representatives of the Press, the
wonderful mineral, agricultural and other
resources of the section through which
that road runs, ended at the National
Hotel in Atlanta, September 2d, 1869.
Whatever may have been the causes
which induced Col. II. to inaugurate this
movement, it is one from which wo anti¬
cipate good to our great State. Nothing
can be properly valued and appreciated
which is not adequately understood. Tlie
ostensible object was to bring to the no¬
tice of the public through the press; the
great resources of upper Georgia and
Alabama and a portion of Tennessee.
This object was in part accomplished. To
the extent of their opportunity to look into
and understand the country they visited,

“,Well, here we is, Massa Jack," said a
colored pair to the Clerk of the Court, one
day last week.
“ What will you have ?” inquired the
Clerk.
“Well, Mass Jack, we is been married
neatly a your, and find it ain’t no use a
tryiu’—we can't live together any longer.
•So wes come to git ’vorced. I wants it
aud she wants it— so we ’eluded to come
and git you to fix it up for us.” Here the
female portion of the family entered her
protest, saying she “ didn’t want no vorce.
’Twas hint, a lying rascal, dat wanted to
quit.” Sho was willing to stick to her
bargain. She did’nt want no ’vorce.
The Clerk informed them that he bad
no authority to act in the matter, and told
them that upon proper grounds before the
Superior Court, they might be fixed
up, &c.
The unhappy pair retired, with the as*
sertion on their lips that “ there is no law
for niggers.”

Messrs. T. C. & DcL. Turner are the

“I have one of the above natued presses
now on exhibition and trial in this place,
for the purpose of giving our agricultural
friends an opportunity to examine it for
tHUnselve*. I shall remove it in a few
‘days to my Dixie place, just outside of the
corporate limits of Athens, where it can
be seen in operation at any time. It is a
Southern invention, and believed by ex
ports fo bo superior to any press in exist¬
ence and cheaper than any yet offered.
Parties needing a cotton screw are es*
pecially invited to ,cdl and examine this
press before supplying themselves. The
press weighs a little over 2,000 pounds—
can behaaled conveniently—occupies but
little spaoe^-requiers only two hands to
pack a bale on it, (never using mules at
all) It costs 6175 all complete and ready

more than it would cost to put up one of
the old fashioned (Giraffe) cotton screws;
warranted to come up to representation,
