TllC Ku-Klux—Rescue Of Ox
ford. *
On Wednesday nipht last, between the
hours of cloven and twelve o’clock, a baud
of r armed , men—dwguwcd-about . , , . silty . , in .
nu«ber--CfltW our town-bought the
jail first, and then the residence of the
Sheriff nnd Jailor of Huncock county, feu
the avowed purpose of ..bog possaai*
of the person of Janies Oxford, a prisoner
in the county jaM—charged with the
murder of Cant. John Taylor. They first
went to the jail and demandeJthe key of
i**-Harbin, vr rr , . >. who was in charge , of / the .
fe u, »Td on duty around the jail. lieing
told that Kogcrs had,' .Urn key at his
residence J
> u peremptorily demanded . ,
that hf (Mr. conduct
them to Mr. Uogoru’TSssl and forced
“T® f® obey. On arriving M^>JLj.vei's caiu&- r
they surrouhded it, and
tlie Shetyr. Mr. llogers opened his front
door aftd fottiNk^sevcral pistols presented
towards the door/Vd asked the parties
what they Wanted. wkciTth«yquietly coWj^r in
formed him that they had the
jail key. { Mv. Rogers remonstrated, Tl%t«.
to n 6 effect. They demanded it in un.
measured terms, assuring him that they
would have it, regardless of consequences,
admitting at the time, that they knew it
was his duty to refuse it, but insisting
that he must go .with them to the jail.
Mr. Rogers finding himself overwhelmed
by numbers, told them where the key was,
rather than have them search his house
and distress Lis sick family,
Whctv they had got the key, they sur*
rounded Mr. Rogers, artd in that position
marched to the jail; when at the jail
door, they told Mr. Rogers that they had
come to relieve him of one of his prison¬
ers, (Oxford,) and that they would not
molost any other prisoner, or any civil
person whatever—but assuring him that
they would make such disposition of Ox¬
ford as should forever relieve Hancock
county and its citizens of his presence—
—intimating that they were going to kill
him as soon as they got out of the town.
They opened the door, took Oxford out,
and retired in the direction of fc'anders
villc, or the shoals of Ogcrchco ; and thus
ended tho first visit of the Ku-Klux to
Sparta.
The Sheriff is wholly blameless, as re¬
sistance would have been foolish.
