EXPERIMENT WITH FERTILI¬
ZERS.
Mr. John J. Strange, of this county,
» practical fine farmer of long experience
ftnd succ<8s, has kindly furnished
us with the following resu ts upon a
test patch of cotton on his premises.—
The soil is sandy pine land with good
clay foundation. Mr. Strange applied
ftt'the rate of $10 worth of the fertilizer
Of guano to the acre He prepared and
planted all at the same time and in the
same manner, and none had an avarage

the was as :

Made the above test at the instance
and for the benefit of those cultiv, tin /
similar soil in this part of the country.
We are confident it has beeu fairly and
impartially done, arid the figures
the amount of seed cotton realized from
each row across a 1-2 acre lot.
Othets, we understand, are experi¬
menting iri these matters, and they can
not do their countrymen greater service
than by furnishing them to us for pub¬
lication. Ev ry farmer with whom we
have conversed on the subject ex¬
pects to use a fertilizer next year, and
they would like to know which pays
the best.— Sand‘jrsvilie Georgian.

CHEMISTRY IN FARMING.
The soil is that upon which the far¬
mer spends his labor; control, the atmosphere, although
the weather he cannot
by close observation, he may forcast it.
No plant will flourish and mature un¬
less its roots are situated in a soil con¬
taining all the mineral elements found
in the afrties of the plant. The soil is
and the home of the plant—its it birth-place
station, where runs through all
the difterent stages of i.ta development,
and from whence it receives its nutri¬
ment. '
The fertility of soil depends upon its
fineness ot particles, since the food of
the plant must cuter it iu a state of so¬
lution. That is. the mineral matters
must be dissolved in water, and the ra
pidity of their solution is in direct pro¬
portion to the extent of their surface
exposed. Hence the finer particles ot
earth, the more abundantly will the
plant be supplied with the necessary
elements.. V.
The soil has the power of absorbing
moisture from the atmosphere, and con
denseing the same in its pores, aud the
absorption of water vapors determines
its capacity for absorbing other vapors
and gases. & ,, '
The part which capilliarity of the
•oil plays is somewhat analagous to
that of a lamp—tho soil is the lamp
and wick, and the water is the oil.
By the action ot the sun and wind,
the surface is rendered dry by evapora¬
tion, and as fast as the particles of wa
tar escape in vapor, their places are sup¬
plied in capiliarity from the stores ol
moisture below; the ascending water
b Hogs along with it the soluble miner
I matter of the soil, and thus the roots
©f the plants are situated in a stream of
their appropriate food, and those par
tides of materials not taken up in the
tissues of the plant are brought to the
surface to be washed down by succeed
ing rains. With a deep subsoil and
good drainage, capiliarity aids gravita¬
tion, and the minerals brought to the
surface then have a downward uistribu
tion. It is easy to see, in a good soil
well tilled, how capilliarity thus acts,
keeping the roots of the plant constant¬
ly immersed in a stream of mineral solu¬
tion, thatis now ascending, now descend¬ food
ing, but never at rest, ami how the
of the plant is thus made to circulate
around the organs fitted for absorbing
it.
The same causes that maintain th s
perpetual supply of water and food to
the plant, are also efficacious in con¬
stantly preparing new supplies. The
materials of the soil are constantly un¬
dergoing chemical changes, whereby the
»ilica, lime, phosphorus, potash, etc.,
become soluble in water, and accessible
to ihe plant. carbouic acid,
W.ter, charged with
0 3 d oxygen, is the chief source III ttio
c or emical changes. The more exten
sive • and j rapid circulation of rtf wutar water in in
the soil, the more mineral matter will
be rendered soluble iu a given time, and,
Other things . . being . equal, i the ^ | ItSS .„;ii Will

your farms will improve in produc¬
tiveness—-bearing draw in mind that different
crops and differently thatthe upon the mineral
resources, rotation of'erops
has a tendency to fertilize the soil; for
instance, clover with it.s long roots,
