Letter from a Plant kr.— The
planters of the South hire lahorto raise
cotton, and they hire the northwest to
raho their corn, hay, fodder, bacon, iard
and flour; they hire Cuba and other
foreign countries to maAe their sugar,
molasses, syrup, tea, ooffee and saH.
They hire the North to manufacture
their iron, domestic goods, calicoes,
boot* and shoes, hats, and every thing
,
to eat and dfiok (water excepted) and
wear for man or beast. Chains, bar
nesH, bridles, axes, axe-handles, hoes,
shovels, spades, leather, lobucco, uateut
lamps, coffee-toasters uud every kirn! of
trick that Yankee ingenuity can devise,
is brought and sold to the unwise cot¬
ton raiser. 1 wan bora and raised in
the South, and have been a planter for
more than half a century, and have not
bought a bushel of coin or a pound of
bacon for family use, and will say to all
planters of the South, that if you do
not raise more of your own consump¬
tion, you will bring starvation and ruin
upon the land. Without a change how
will your posterity fair ? Will you take
my advice? If so, ma/cc your own
support at home. Outside of that,
raise as much cotton Ys you can. Lay
up the proceeds for your tender off¬
spring alter you are gone. What will
be your condition if cotton should fail V
Awful in the extreme. Let us alt en¬
deavor to become au independent aut
happy people, is my earnest desire.
