Tlir (’oiuinx Election—Hattn>
lor UHlcclioii!
We congratulate f he voters of Geor¬
gia that an election will be held this
full, and being deeply impressed with
the importance of overthrowing the
corrupt Administration of Bullock,
Blodgett & Co., wc urge Upon all men
who value their privileges as freemen,
to unite and bestir them selves to accom¬
plish this result.
*£ The party in power have used every
effort to keep the State under Military
*rule—they have, in violation of their
duty, under a Constitution made by
themselves, sought to perpetuate their
term of office, and fasten upon the free¬
men of Georgia, a despotism as greedy
of gain, and as destitute of patriotism
as ever cursed any country, in any age.
• Pretending to the colored race that
they were their peculiur guardians, they
have deceived them iu every promise
made. How many have ever realized
the mule and forty aeres of land, held
out.by the shameless carpet-baggers
and duped negro politicians, now hold¬
ing seats in the Legislature I
What colored man is to-day one whit
better off now than he was four years
ago? How many ure as well off?
By every means in their power they
have endeavored to bring about bad
feeling between the white and colored
people of the State. Where was the
wisdom of such a course ? Neither cau
proaper so well where there is distrust
and bitterness, as where kindly feelings
and mutual confidence eansts! The
loaders of the Radical party know this,
but what care they for the black man,
exceyt io get his vote! What have they
done to educate his children, a subject
^b\cK they knew was dear to the black

they more brfljMj| t|mn oU the rest
of their race in th*, c ounty 1 Colored
men oi Hancock, they voted to h®id on
to their seats in the Legislature in vio¬
lation of your Constitution—to keep
the place for themselves, and to keep you
from circling other colored representa¬
tives in their places. Was that the
bargain when you elected them ? Are
they your masters in politics, or will
you, as freemen, henodforth think and
act for yourselves, and elect whom you
please to serve you ?
The Tho Radical party have wasted
und robbed the people o! the taxes paid
into the Treasury. The leaders have
grown richer and the people poorer.
Let us one and all unite and change
the State of affairs- -send representatives
who will loo* less to their pockets and
more to the welfare of the people.—
There is no chnneo to make matters any
worse by a change—darkness and gl oom
hang over us and our destruction is
well nigh complete, pecuniarily and
politically.
Will you awake to a consciouoness of
your danger in time to save our good
qld fcjfute. from utter ruin 1 The mat¬
ter is in your own hands— act wisely
your part and all will be well with us.

A carious article in reference to the
Pound case has recently been publinhed
in this county.
The writer uses this language, “ As

Further on, in the same article, we
find the following language, “ No donht

The inconsistency of the article will
be as apparent to our readers'as the
implied charge upon the jury is without
foundation in fact. The jurors who
were opposed to conviction for murder
in this cose when tried in Hancock are
men of high standing and integrity—
above all suspicion. This being ondis

expressed, j aud i the .r jury i box under «

prisoner’s “ crime being of the very

State Democratic Convention—,
The State Democratic Convention in
Atlanta last Wednesday has won imnior
tality by the selfconti of and diacretion
which marked its proceedings- All con
cur in saying that snob a body of men
has rarely been assembled in Georgia,
It numbered about five hundred, gather
ed from every section* and almost or
quite every county in the State, and
representing, in a pre-eminent degree,
the talent,, intelgence, and moral and
social elevation of Georgia. It might
well have been expected that among so
many thinking and speaking men the
cacoetbes loquendi would have been, to
some extent, almost irrepressible; but it
was effectually controlled, and the Dem¬
ocratic party to-day cannot be called to
account for a hasty word or ill-consider¬
ed statement spoken in the ‘ardor pf de¬
bate’ or under the ‘inspiration of elo¬
quence.’ That is an achievement be¬
yond all praise. And a like commend¬
able abstinence has characterized its ac¬
tion. It has done no more that the oc¬
casion called for, and precisely what it
demanded, and has done it with propri¬
ety and dignity. ,Oo the whole, wc
think they have come up to the Scrip¬
ture standard—‘wise as serpents aud
harmless as doves.’ The Rads, who
were on the look out for some sali¬
ent indiscretions, are much disappoint
ed.

W$*re disposed to thioi the true so¬
lution of the matter is that the Prus¬
sians have arrived at a point where they
find that they cease to holy the condi¬
tions of successful invasion. The French
army has strengthened by reinforce¬

by the casualities, of battle, distance
from their base of operations, etc., and
they are just now in the condition of the
man who had the wolf by the ears—
fearful to hold on and equally afraid to
let go. To advance, if possible, is ex¬
face tremely hazardous, and to retreat in the
of a powerful army is a movement
involving much loss his and great peril.
Apparently there been a constant
series of conflicts since Sunday, and we
are told by the dispatches to-day (18th)
that a great battle is even now raging.
The result of this action we hope to get
in time for the present edition, But
apprehend it will be a defeat of the
