A JXewspapcr published at Athens, Geo.
DEVOTED TO THE UNION OF THE STATES AND
THE RIGHTS OF THE STATES.
SINCE issuing our proposals about a year since 1
lor enlarging and improving the Southern Banner’
event-shave transpired in this State, which render it
a duty we owe to out Iv is, as vv< II as our friends and
patrons, to issue a uewt prospectus.
It isitnposstble for the most superficial observer of
the signs of the titnas, not to have, drawn ‘front them
the irresistible conclusion that the political element's
ol our State have, within the last six months, under
gone a revolution as great as it was sudden and niiex*
pected; and we (eel it a duty we owe to the public,
to scatter any lingering mists which may still sot round
us, produced by this war of elements, this breakaig
up ol old party foundation!, and this mingling of ex- ‘
It ernes liilhet (•> so opposite in the formation of new"''■
oik-s, in order that our true position may be revealed, j
both to those with whom we shall hereafter act, and
to those by whom we may be oppo-ed. It is notour
intention, however, at present to enter into an expla- s
i ation ot the reasons which have actuated us iu mak
ing a chojee between the parties lately organized in
our State —they have been heretofore, and may be
hereafter, more fully explained in ourcolutnns. Our
object is simply to call the attention of tin public t<r’ x *h
our press, ami to enlist the aid < f those iti its behalf
with whom as a partv we nre dcteimined to act.
The self styled “ State Riehls I arty” having adopt
ed the doctrine of nullification in its most olinoxious
sens- , as the very soul o| its creed, we w ash our hands
of it forever, and pledge our best exertions to support
and maintain that party both ; t the Southandlhiougli*
out the whole country, which, rallying around that
abused and villified patriot, ANUftEW Jackson, have
pledged th< rtiseiv* s to maintain agait -t consolidation
on one hand, and nullification on the other, the integri
ty, honor and glory "i our tree institutions. X*
With this free and candid acknowledgment of our *"
viewsand sentiments, we submit our paper to the ten- ;
dir mercies of < ur opponents, and to the protection ot
our friends Our opposition to nullification hereto
fore. has, as might have been anticipated called down
upott us the proscription ol a portion of our old friends,
and their exertions lo prostrate us increase, in pro
portion as their zeal for tbe Calhoun mania waxes hot. --
W e hope, aowever, that the disposition lately evinced
1 y the friends ofthe Constitution and Union, to up
i.j’d and sustain us against their nvUiftiing efforts, will
gr< and strengthen in a proportionate degree, and
that we will be enabled, by their countenance and at
sistanee, to “ go ahead” in a course so disinterested as
respects oursolves, and a cause so sacred as regard. ■.
