THE TELLEGRAPH,
A P7EEKLY PAPER PUBLI HED IN DARIEN
AT THREE DOLLARS PER ANNUM,
' BY NATHANIEL M. CAULi ER..
OUR first year has nearly closed, and as yet, we
nave never come belore the public with a re
gular prospectus. Our vi ws it is trie, h ve been
briefly set forth in the first number i our .■ p» r but
its circulation, at that early period vv as of course, ve
ry limited, and they could not b< very widel dissem
inated. Under these circumstances, presenting our
Prospectus, it is but right that we should, in as lew
words as practicable, reiterate them. Our Country,
our State, and our Home, have an equal claim, and
their several and united interest, it shah ever be our
aim to promote.
The general politics of our beloved country, shall
occasionally occupy our columns, but as Editors, we,
disclaim ail political party conneciions. A strict and
uodeviating neutrality, tffiall always characterize our
writings, forrea-ons which are good, and substantial.
Our patrons and friends are tound among those ot
both parties, and it is at their sngges ion, we consent
to pursue ihis course, for the establishment of the pa
yer is desired by all, and could not be sustained ex
c<“-pi by a Union of both. Thus then, we aie engaged
and to om friends ot both parlies, to our patrons, and
to lhe public-—we pledge our best, and most unreinit
led exertions, to render ours, a useful, enier<anmg,
and inCeresling paper.

THE BEGGAR.
Not long since an old beguar, named James
was in the daily habit of placing himself at
the principal gate bl a church in Paris. Ilis
manners ami language, showed that he had
received an education far superior to that
which is lhe ordinary lot of poverty. Under
Ins rags, which weie worn wnh certain dignity,
shone a still living recollection of a more ele
vated condition; This beggar also enjoyed
great authority among lhe paupers belonging
to the parish. Ills kindness, his impartiality
in distributing alms among his fellow paupers,
his zeal in appeasing their quarrels, had earned
for him well merited respect. Yet his Ufa
and misfortunes were a complete mystery to
his must intimate comrades, as well as to the
persons a'tached to the parish. Every moiu
ing for twenty-five years, he regularly came
and sat down at the same place. People were
so accustomed to see him there, that he m'do
as it were, part of the furniture of the porch ;
vet, none of Ins fellow-beggar-, could relate
h'* lra-t par'icular of tits lue.
Onlv ”tie thing w s known. James never
set Ins fool m the climctr, and yet he was a
