Eiovc for Wet Weather, OR THE WOOING OF CORNELIUS o’RIGGE. 21 TAZaE. “ Tell her I’ll love her, While the clouds drop rain.”—Modern Son<r. kaei night i heard for the second time in my life, the song of which the above are the commencement-words; I had heard “ that air before,” and the circumstances attendant upon that occurrence, I have now the pleasure of laying before my readers. Captain Cornelius O’Rigge was a dashing young guardsman, tall thin and genteel, with a head of hair black as it could be made by art (Dame Nature havin«r gifted the gallant Captain with one of fiery red.) and a moustache of the most approved curl; he was an excellen dancer, and cold sing like a nightingale; then he had such a winning way with him, he was so eminently gifted with those powers of eloquence, universally known by the appellation of “ blarney,” that he was well known from one end of Bath to the other by the name of ” the ladies’ gentleman.” Cornelius O’Rigge was a gallant lellow, showering all bis kmdnebs and attentions on the young and old, without distinction, and many a pretty little maiden of eighteen has seen herself forsaken fol her grandmother of eighty. Cornelius was a matvelloug favorite an ong the old ladies, and although it was said that he bad b< en overheard tnakmg extr ordt nary declarations at the feet of Mi SS p r .,d eii tia Popk.n, daughter and heiress of Ladv Pop kin widow of a be knighted i ihzen; CoroeitUfr hims< If was evei anxious to convince he world that he was more regaidtu! ot her ladyship iho widow. * Men have strange tastes sometimes, and I have treqmmtly wondered a< my fnend’s pre wiring Lady Popkin, when it was obvious and evident that he ch -Tm.ng Miss Prudentia had something more than a liking for him. It was I»jiiarkablv wet w-ru. -a—*- —— about the middle of January that be first at tached 1 imself; the day had been dark, gloomy and tniseiable, one ot those awful days which make a man fu for St. Lukes, or any thing else that is deplorable. Cornelius had been invited ton little musical party, at which Lady Popkin was also present; Mis.- P. from regard to her health, she said, had refused to make' one of ihe party. 1 remember hearing that evening a soft-tongued y outh sing thut pretty air, “ Tell her I’ll love her, While the clouds drop rain !” Cornelius was sitting by the side of Ladv Pop kin; during the previous part of the < vening, be had been sitting absorbed in thought; but as the youth lisped out these honeyed words, he seemed to wake from a trance, and raising his curled head, the eyes ot Lady P..pkm met his. The effect win singular; Cornelius look ed unutterable things, Ins g-ize was fixed upon her ladyship’s face; her ladyship blushed and looked down; the song proceeded; the Captain sighed; Lady Popkin endeavoured to beat tune with ber right foot, but her thoughts were confused; she tried her left fool, but to no purpose; she grew more confused than ever, f<»r my friend Cornelius sighed again, and by and by, hi* fingers touched her hlly hand; that hand resisted not, although the tare of her la dyship be.ray< d 'he gteatness of her heart’s emotion; tn another moment the hand of Lady Popktn was clasped in that bl Cornelius, und the singing youth concluded his ditty. i “O, what a beautiful air !” exclaimed Cor- I neltus. “ It is divine !'* sighed her ladyship. ’ “ How sweet must be the passion of love,” whispered Cornelius. “ You think so perhaps, because you hav© nev’r expelienc< d i‘.” said Lady P. ” VXeie vou tu be once tn love, you would soon tire of loving.” Lady Popkin !” cried the gallant Captain, “ surely I not merit such suspicion.” “ I speak according to the world’s expert ence,” quoth het ladysh.p; “ I do not mean to say you would prove f ilse to love; but it is tho character of your s« x”— ” I It el that I could love— forever," mur mured the Captain, evidently wishing to avoid an argum* nt. ‘‘ hat a pry ’tis, then, that there is no kind I dam-el m the woild to tiy your constancy; we must look out for one.” ‘‘ N.>y, my lady,” whispered Cornelias, giving his moustache an elegant twirl as he spake, " upon ati occasion of such a nature the ■ ucntlerimiJ aiiould be left to make his own elec tioti.” ” By all means,” replied Lady P. “ and now commence, your search immediately.” ” 11 niiy have been commenced ere this,” r> | licit ihe C ip ain.
