THE BRIDE’S FAREWELL,
BY MRS. HEMAN3.
VV hy do I weep ? to leave the vine
VV hose clusters o’er me bend —
The myrtle, yet, oh ! call it mine !
The flowers I loved to tend.
A thousand thoughts of all things dear,
Like shadows o’er me sweep,
I leave my sunny childhood here,
Oh, therefore let me weep!
I leave thee, sister ! we have played
Through many a joyous hour,
VV here the silvery gleam of the olive ehade
Hung dim o’er fount and bowei.
Yes ! thou and I, by stream, by shore,
In song, in prayer, in sleep,
Have been as we may be no more—
Kind sister, let me weep!
Z leave thee, farther! Eve’s bright moon
Must now light other feet,
With the gathered grapes, and the lyre in tune
Thy horn w ard steps to greet.
Thou in whose voice, to bless thy child,
Lay tunes of love so deep,
Whose eye o’er all my you'h had smiled—
I leave thee ! let me weep !
Mother! I leave thee ! —or. thy breast
Pouring out joy and wo ;
I Lave found that holy place of rest
Still changeless—yet I go !
Lips, that have lulled me with yonr strain,
Eves, that have watched my sleep ’
VV ill earth give love like j/ours again ?
Sweet mother ! let me weep !

NATURE’S WORKS EVINCE DESIGN.
BY E. D. FOLLETT.

In measured orbits, ev’ry planet runs
While all encircling their respective sura
In perfect system, forming, as they roll,
Harmonious partsofonestupendous whole;
And, as, in order, each revolving ball,
A unity of movement, moves in all.
By this harmonic movement of toe spheres,
Is time divided into days and years ;
The rolling seasons stated times observe,
And never from lhe laws of nature swerve-.
Summer a .d winter in succession bring
The bounteous autumn and the blooming spring
And glowing suns give genial heat and light,
Revolving orbs, successive day and night.
How nicely planned, that one perpetual change
May still revolve, and no one point derange ?

No longer bound in winter’s icy chain,
V) ith joy we see new VCTdure uloltie ibe plain ;
The rosy spring, when decked in all its bloom,
Come f.rth like beauty bursting from the tomb.
When autumn comes and spreads bis bounteous
feast,
For all the world of li'is, how truly blest ■
We then forget the beauty of the spring,
And feel a joy which autumn’s treasures bring,
From day and night, successive comforts flow,
As sweet as spring or autumn can bestow.
How could we toil where darkness veils the night.
O. sb ep beneath the sun’s refulgent light?
Night, o’er the earth her sable mantle throve.
And evening’s calmn invites us to repose;
VV hen morning tints the sky, and zephyrs play,
We rise refreshed to meet the coming day.
V' hat but Almighty Power cnnld put in foice
This grand machinery of the universe;
S.< wisely wrong J, through all its ample range,
VVi'h all the pleasing novelty of change ?
