G'obvnitfr Schley,— ir The pub
lication of a letter of your ‘ xcellen-1
cy’s correspondent, in ‘l/ic
of Union,"ol ’he 14th instant, makes
it my duty to notice, in a special
manner, his false reprc-entatioii of
the facts in "elation io the arrest of
several individ i ils therein allude I
t , and his unjust and unmanly at
tempt to east a foul aspersion upo >
my official as w. Il as private repu
tation, and those concerned with me
in the tramsa tion alluded to.
It is true, as your excellency’s
correspondent has mentioned, tint
I divl with a suflicicut force under tn ,
command, enter ihc houses of a ma
jority of the citiz *n> of Vpring Place
on the 27th ult. and did airest ten
individuals, by virtue of divers war
i rants, uh ter the official sig lature of
i a Justice of the Peace in and for
the county of Murray; and not as
your Excellency’s correspondent un
justly ins imate-; Cinder color of a
Stales war rent.' 1 These persons
were charged, with having commit
ted, on the first day of January last
assaults and batt: ries with intent to
murder. And owing, as i presume
your Excellency ought to know, to
an entire suspension of the ad. :inis
f ration of the laws of the
State, in Murray county for several
years past, from causes I will pre
sently mention, it became impera
tive on me, in ord» r to ensure a
faithful discharge of my official duty,
to Numinous such a force as would be
sufficient to eflect that object. With
this force well prepared, I entender
cd the houses oi the persons alluded
to, an I under the authority above
mentioned, made the arrest com
plained of; among whom were found
the muskets, well charged, we, 1 yet
re/’ire to say, afterwards committed
tjihe flames. Ihe indignation of
those, who aided in the arrest, and
s izureofthe muskets, weie such,
upon there capture, that noth
mg short of their entire destruction
could ap. ease their justly excited
t- eiings. We were then conscious,
and arc now fully apprised that the
act cannot be justified umkrthe laws
d our country, we feel coidideiit,
uudtr ali the circiiuHtaiH it s, that the
'a: t i> in a moral point of
view, and in the sight of high licav
t :i. Ihe deplorable condition o!
affairs ia this country fjr several
years pa’st, is known to some extent
■toyour Excellency and the people
of Georgia. It will be recollected,
’that this miserable state of affairs
' had its origin ia a celebrated mee
ting of the ci.izens of Spring Place,
in the cady put of the yea"r
At that meeting to the shame and
disgrace of those connected with it
be spoken, it will be remembered
that a long string of resolutions were
passed, censuring, in the strongest
language, the official acts of the then
presiding Judge of our Court, and
even using threats and menacing
language, ofa highly culpable char
acter, towards that officer for having
issued a certain writ called a Quo
te arranto” which finally resulted in
breaking up the Court, and a pros
tration ot the laws of the state at the
footstool ofa military despotism; the
worst oi all despotisms. And now
sir, if your excellency will indulge
me for a moment, 1 will briefly re
count to you a few of the causes
which ultimately led to the destruc
tion ol the muskets.
Soon after the prostration of the
Judiciary in this county, and its en
tire suspension within its limits, the

his purpose, aided and backed by a
certain little sycophant!., ictre-zcorker
of the ( oosa i,and Company, rep
resented to his Ex-Exellency who I
verily believe to be your Excellen
cy’s correspondent, the necessity of
I raising and keeping up in this coun
ty a military force, for the ostensible
I purpose of protecting our citizens
1 from Indian hostilities. t'he 'feller
lof the Central Bank of Georgia, as

ply appraised was appointed to its
command. The countless scenes
|of bloodshed and horror, from that
time down to the day of his elevation
arc too numerous and perhaps too
j incredible for a communication of
this character, suflice it to say, no
i election could be held, no courts,
nor indeed any thing else of a public
and I may add, scarsely any thing ot
private nature could be done, with
out the presence of a military force,
and the consent of your Excellency’s
J aid. la the first organization of this
county, the legislature established
sever d election prccints in the coun
ty. And during the continuance of
the ‘Guard’; so sparse was our pop
ulation, that these prccints were ea
sily guarded and the elections con
trolled by a military force. In 1835
your Excellency disbanded the
Guard; and with it we had loudly
hoped our difficulties would have
ceased. But to our great misfortune
and the disgrace of our county, the
monster was only scotched, not kill
ed. The population of the county,
notv, ithstanding its reputation abroad
for blood-shed and scenes of horor,
immediately commenced growing
with an astonishing rapidity. The
feller of the Central Bank of Geor
gia, witnessed with fear and trum
tiling, the near and certain approach
of a different state of things in this
county. And, like all good generals,
in time of peace prepared for war,
and its train oi necessary consequen
ces. Ender these circumstances,
and with a view of sustaining and
keeping up his former “policy” and
course of conduct, he effected,
through his very particular friend’
our late ‘senator, a repeal of the act
establishing election prccints in the
county, at the last session of our le-
gislaturc, by which no general elec
tion could be legally hedd at anv
place in the county, except at .Spring
Place. Under this new regulation
about thirty-five of our best citizens,
residing at remote distances of the
count), resolved upon being upon
the election ground the evening pre
vious to tiie election, i > order that
they might, in a civil and honorable
maimer, have a ‘fair hark’in the pen
ding contest for county officers. But
