THE ELECTION.
Slaw! aside and let f 'herokee speak!
We give the returns of the election as far
as he rd from in to day’s paper. The result
thus far is highly cheering to the Union party ]
Bv compating Governor Schley’s vote this '
year with that he received two years since in
the Cherokee Counties heard from, it will be
seen that he has an increased majority of abont
400 votes. For the last four <*r five weeks of
the late campaign, the opposition have ap
- pealed, with all the eloquence, all the inge
nuity and all the tact and cunning they were
master of, to the sympathies, the prejudices
and averice of the people of the Cherokee
cotm-ry. They have been told that Governor
Schley, was opposed to the policy ol (lie State
in the Survey and distribution of the Chero
kee lands.—Th I he maintained the doctrine,
I that the Supreme (Joint alone could legally
i entertain ci imin d j risdieiio.'i over the coun’ry.
■ —1 hat he had issued an order to raise ten
Companies of arm’d soldiers to coerce the peo
ple to vote lor bun—That his s iperintendence
<>f die survey and location of the great Wes
tern and Atlantic R nl Road, was a paltry elec
tioneering excursion That he gave the noto
rious Bishop the appointment he now holds in
the Centr i' Bank, and a thousand other false-
Imods equally a« destitute of truth. But, like
all such i all'imiiie*, they h ive recoiled, with
i a d*mlde vt ng mci’ upon their oun heads.—
i lie people of the Cherokee Country have
I r. pelted the base indignity offer'd to their
’ pnrmtism and eaudor, and <he repeated insults
. to their tn'elligem e and sense of propriety and
duty to thetnselves mid their country, in a
smce and a nm' ner that will cause “a “retit
