TKOSPtCTVS -OF 'ME GEORGIA MEDICAL REPORTER. BY JOHN G. SLAPPV, M. D. • Tfhat we should seek 'in the Sciences is truth, and truth, is in the faxts"—Broussais. IT is now more than six years since I first con ceived the idea of publishing periodically the above work, for the following reasons, which are ob vious and striking: There being no publication ot the kind in the State ; and, for ought I know, throughout the whole Southern States ; we are compelled, con sequently, to look to the North, and through her to Europe, for every thing new, rare, and interesting in the science, it would seem peculiary appropriate just at ihe.present time, when the most awtul visita tion is hovering over the land—the Asiatic Choleia. It has already swept across a great extent cf North America ; from Montreal and QXuebec to New Oi leans ; visiting almost every city and town ot any im portance in the Northern Middle and VV estern States. There is left no reasonable ground to .justify the con clusion. that our highly favoured section of country, san much longer escape the impending evil. Besides, have we no disease or modification of disease, inci dent and peculiar to our climate, and remedies native of our country ? Medicine had its origin, in necessity: in motives of. benevolence and philanthropy —in a disposition to mitigate the evils—to ameliorate the condition oi suf fering human nature to bailie fell disease — the greatest curse inflicted on fallen man—and bestow on him Health, the chiefest blessing, saving the atoning blood of our Saviour. Our much lamented Hush said, “while the world, from the progress of intellectual, moral, and political truth, is becoming a more safe and agree able abode for man, the votaries of Medicine should not be idle.” Tire American Linmcus, the late ven erable Benj. S. Bartoti said, “he who discovers one valuable new Medicine, is a more important benefac tor of his species than Alexander, Cesar, Bonaparte, or an hundred .other conquerors. Even his glory, in the estimation ot a truly civilized age, will be great er and more lasting, than that of these admired ravag ed of the world.” What is the condition of our department of science in Georgia ? Indeed and in truth, our Medical lore is lurking tar behind (comparatively speaking) the active improvements M the day—the spirit of the times ad . monishing us to look forward, w ith an unrivited gaze, upon the advance of man and the “inarch of mind.” There-is medical talent in Georgia, and yet she is al most without professional character ; because she has not enterprise, industry and energy. There is mani -1 festly but little written on medicine in our State; med ical reading too, is not pursued with avidity, less stud ied, properly undeistood and regarded. Let us turn our attention to tile constant and inde fatigable efforts of many American teachers ; but es pecially to the late works of our own countryman, professor Jackson of Philadelphia. He inculcates principles upon the unerring guide ot genuine ami in ductive philosophy , he declaims against authority; find boldly asserts the non-existence of a specific gas tric fllice, und advocates other certainties, as impor tant to physiology and truth. The recent splendid discoveries ot Abercrombie of Scotland, of Abernethy, Lawrence, Clutterbuck. Teale, tec. &<:. of England, are their everlasting mon uments. Germany is likewise moving on But above nil, stand the sons of Prance, and ot true medical phi losophy, Andral Broussais, Baron Larry, Pinel Laen nec and others; these moderns oi the moderns, have wholly uprooted the old and ancient systems of rou tine medicine :—they have sought, how ever, not so I much to overthrow former systems founded in error, j &s they have to discover truth, and the real etiology of -disease. They have riot only succeeded ,n removing the rubbish, but in establishing medicine on a surer ami firmer foundation, and giving to it the line of Tnatch onwardto perfection. it would be uncamlid, and it is not to be denied or concealed, that the doctrines of the French school, and particularly those of the deservedly renowned fvid immortal reformer Broussais, will be held and J maintained in tin’s Gazette. We regard them (and ; they me universally admitted) as containing the purest ! (Mid most substantial o( the great fundamental truths j oi physiological medicine. They are founded in data: I the dissecting knife has been made to reveal and de- ! relope from pathological anatomy, principles of a i fixed character. They will be as enduring as time, and as solid as adamant. Principles involved in cause and effect, I that were heretofore considered mysteries inexplica *ble, are now known and established facts. In the : Blind of Broussais, positive philosophy has sought and found confessedly a regenerating and redeeming ’ spirit. Wc come not without diffidence, presenting our humble offering, feeble and retired as it is, to contrib ute our mite at the altar ot professional science : if we i can but give a zest to the young mind, an inclination i mid direction to medical inquiry, it is alt we hope and I expect; it is the “nc plus ultra'' of our w ishes. Some of the best talent of the State is engaged to , Assist and to contribute in the work, and we confi- ' deutly expect to be able to concentrate and combine '•_« fund of foreign and domestic intelligence in oar journal, as •■■••ike it acceptable, if not agreeable ' almost any where. Selections and Extracts will be made, from the follow ing Periodicals; and all new works as they come out: AMERICAN. American Journal of the Medical Science. New York Medical and Physical Journal. Original communications aud <• ssax s well written, andea«es reported accurately an l e itifically. in the practice oi medicine, surgery a J stetries, are solicited. The work will be issued 1 > a Niv press in M icon, in an octavo pamphlet form, c uprising some 150 pages, once in two months, to commence on the first ot January, or as soon as a suffi cient number of subscribers are obtained to authorize the undertaking, nt four dnlltn* per annum. Jurisprudence, i Mercer Institute. FWIHE Mercer Institute, for combining study and 0L manual labour, will go into operation on the 2d I ! Monday in January next, under the direction of the j Rev. B. 11. Sanders. The principle object of the Institution is the educa- ■ tion of pious young men, who arc called to the gospel i ministry and have been licensed by the church to ( which they belong, and have a good report of them that are without—and particularly those who are incii i gent—and such are affectionately invited to bring ; their testimonials and avail themselves gratuitously ot i | the advantages ofThe Institution. But as we.have no j j reason to believe that this class of pupils will fill Up • ! the school • it will receive, in addition, as mnnj-yonn,, j : men of good moral character, as can bo provided for, [ ■ irrespective of religious sentiments. The Committee. ) ! are of opinion that, from the limited state ot its pres- i ! ent accommodations, they will not be able to receive | ! more than 30 to board on the premises the first Term j i As fast, as our friends may find themselves well pleased with the experiment we may make, as to con tribute to our means, we design to enlarge our accom ' modations for students, and open our doors for them, j All the branches of science, usually taught in gram i tner schools, will be taught in this Institution. For want of funds, board and tuition j will be required in advance, to be paid to the stew- i aid. Tuition will be $9 tor the first term, to all en ' gaged in reading, writing, arithmetic, grammar, ge- | ’ ography and history. All the higher branches of J i science and the languages, w ill be taught for sls the j ! fust term —the second ill proportion. j Each student will be required to labourthree hours | ! each day. five and a halfdays in the week. The time j j and kind of labour w ill be directed by the steward,! under the control of the Trustees; and each student j will be expected to conform strictly to the regulations ' of the Institution. It will be expedient for each stu-j I dent to have coarse clothes to work in ; and it is de- ' sired that the wearing apparel of all should be plain 1 and cheap, that there may be as little distinction as i possible, and that the principle of economy may be I fully carried intoevery department of the Institution I As our Institution is in its infancy, and in want of ev- j I cry thing, any useful book, to aid in forming a library, I ! lin'd anv implement for labour, or any suitable article i of furniture, that any friend may find it convenient to contribute, w ill be thankfully received.
