STANDARD DE UNION
A XI)
FR E E TR ADE ADI () Cl TH.
The extensive patronage bestowed by out' fellow 1
citizen noon the Standod of Union, assures us that '
w ■ have not labored in vain ; and the deslr s so gene
j-dtv <*\pressed by its tricuds, to see it placed in a po
siti.> . where its advantage® of information and mcreas
#■ circulation would be more certainly united, we
h ivo determined to remove it to Milledgeville, where
its Editorial columns will continue to • conducted
by its former Editor, Thomas Haynes, esq
I’he principles u hich if has heretofore advocated
it shall continue to maintain with increased energy.
It shall be the Standard of Union—lt »hall support
nnd defend the Union (d’ all the States” as (lie only
means of oresm'ving “ the sovereignly and indepen
dence of each.”
it sh ui be n free Press, and will speak of men. mea
sures mid pert is with becoming freedom.
It will continue, as it has done, to inculcate those
great ail'd wholi ®ei„.-. truths upon which our lathers
so firmly asserted mid gallantly maintained the so
vereignty, the Union and the independence of the
United States.
We shall, at the same time, oppose any nnd every
nbuse mid usurpation of powerby the federal Go
Vernmenl, by all constitutional means ; and as Zeal
ously oppose all rash and reckless movements by the
statese ilculate.l (o jeopardize the harmony of our
blessed Union, “ until tne accumulation of oppression,
shall outweigh the evils of separation ”
We believe man is capable of self-government, and
we will not be instrumental in arresting the experi
ment now in progress, by which alone this great
problem can be s lived ; because we desire to seethe
principles of the American Revolution acted out hat
the world may know, whether mankind are wo thy
the blessings of liberty and riidepeiidence. or whether
from their .‘Avn weakness and folly, they are the na
tural subjects of anarchy and despotism
We have too much confidence in the wisdom and
firmness it our institutions, in the patriotism and iu
•telligr’ice of the people to question the final and glo
rious triumph of republican government over all
Others.
'The present aspect of tiffairs in Georgia demands
flic active service of every friend 4 th» Union. The
disorganizing doctrine of Nullification is at this mo
ment, menacing the foundations of our government,
and if suffered to triumph, will destroy the faire-t la
brie of liberty, which was ever erected by the wisdom
of man.
It shall be our business as it has been through our
brief career, to strip it ot its gaudy and alluring deco
rations, and hold it up to the public gaze, deformed
and loathsome as it is.
As it regard' men, We shall judge them by their
acts, and speak ol them ns we think—for one. we shall
stick to old Hickory, until he commits some more
damning net, than preserving tins Union from tin
nil and desolation meditated against it, by ‘ .1 ihu
G ild veil ''alh'mn'' and his mini' ns : nor shall we
abuse him for a tyrant an I despot until we shall have
Fend r< J abautns much service to our country as he

inenl oi as, stem of measures intended finally to re-
JetiV' every article of luxury entiri ly from taxation,
and thereby to throw the whole, burden ot the re ye
line upon articles 4 prime necessity.
For the spirit and ability with which we shall at
tack the pi inciples of our adversaries and defend our
own. we must ruler our readers to the columns of the
Standard from its commencement to the present ;
with the further assurance, that we (<■<■! an additional
motive to incraa«e our energies, from the very kind
itnri hid itgvmt in winerin which our feeble efforts, in a
good can e hive been regarded by a large portion of I
our f allow-citizens.
As soon as new materials can bn obtained, the pa-I

mean time, we beg our patrons to bear with th «;Ze i
of our sheet, keeping tins truth in const nt rem -m- I
