Last Tuesday evening as the 5;15
mail train arrived into our city, a
stylishly dressed young man with a
fairy looking young lady, alighted
from the cars and made their way to
the Perkins House, The strange
young man then left the hotel and
began inquiring for the Ordinary,
which let the cat out, and of course,
made the people anxious to know
who the couple were. A clerk was
found and the proper papers procured,
and nothing was then liking but some
one to perform the ceremony. A

turned to Atlanta that night on

of Thursday, which caused a stir in
the Fickett household and the follow
ing came out in the Atlanta Consti

Married—At the Perkins house in
this city, Tuesday evening at 8 o,clock,
Mr. Yancy L. Sean, of Birmingham,
Ala., to Miss Mattie J. Fickett, of At
lanta, Ga., Rev. D. J. Myrick officiating.
The above notice appeared in the
last week’s issue of the Douglasville
New South and is the sequel to a
pretty and romantic love affair.
’Tis the old story retold of two
3’oung people who, with fear of paren
tal objection in their hearts, hie away
to a neighboring village and secretly
take the marital, vows.
For quite a while Mr. Yancey L.
Senn, who is a prominent young man
in Birmingham, Ala., hag paid marked
attention to Miss Mattie J. Fickett, a
pretty young lady who lives with her
parents at 61 Haden street, this city.
She is the daughter of of Mr. R. H.
Fickett, the well-known business man
who is connected with the Atlanta Pa
per Company,
• Mr. Senn frequently came from
Birmingham to visit the young lady,
and gradually the mutual friendship
developed into an affection of a more
serious nature. As a result the two
young people became engaged, but not
a word was said to an/ one.
Last Tuesday Mr. Senn came over
as usual, and made his way to the
Fickett residence. He was happily
met by the young lady, but the stay
at the house was short. The din and
noise of the street without were not in
accordance with their feelings. Ap
parently their hearts’ desire was to
trip together oyer wooded hills and
talk! of the future midst scenes akin
to'the air castles no doubt they had
ofteh built.
Word was left that they were going
out (near Decatur.
Bu„ it has developed that the young
peojple changed their minds. Instead
of going to Decatur, they went to the
union depot and boarded the Southern
train for Douglasville.
(j)n reaching Douglasville the young
coujple went to the Perkins house.
Here Miss Fickett remained while th
happy groom sought the ordinary o

riage license. Returning toThe hote*

Returning to AUantajuire young
couple went to the homt/nfj|S5EB3
parents, but, according to the prear
ranged plan, nothing was said of their
marriage. In the af ternoon Mr. Senn
leturned to Birmingham without his
bride,
In the meantime the young couple’s
secret became known in the little vil
lage of Douglasville, and a notice ap
peared in the local newspaper, The
New South, last week.
The notice greatly interested Mr.
Theo Calloway, private secretary to
United States District Attorney Joe
James. It seems that Mr. Calloway
is a warm friend of the Fickett fami
ly, He called at the Fiekett residence
last night and sprung a sensation
when he asked about the marriage.
The young lady appeared much sur
prised, and denied that she was mar
ried. , ^Father Fickett became inter
ested at this stage of the game, and
started on an investigating tour. He
asked Mr. Galloway to produce the
clipping, whereupon the latter gentle
man went to his office and scured a
copy of the paper and returned. When
the notice had been read the young
lady confessed, and through smiles
and sobs received the usual parental
forgivness.
