wh- SUhkolc. MARIETTA, - - - - - APRIL 8, Attesitiosa, Firenuen! There will be a special meeting of Marietta Fire Company, No. 1, this evening, at the En gine House, at U o’clock. Punctual attend ance is requested, as matters of importance v ill be brought up for consideration By order, H. M. HAMMETT, Sec’y. Dancing Academy.—We would call atten tion to the card of Prof. Nott, in our paper to day, proposing teach a dancing at the Mari etta Hotel. Those desirous of rendering them selves proficient in the art of “ tripping grace fully the light fantastic toe,” may find it to tueir interest to give the gentleman a call. —mat ♦ • -4«w* law Military Movements.—On Saturday last, the McDonald Guards, numbering some 30 rank and file, paid a vi it to Kingston, to par ticibate in a grand military ad vertised for that day. Companies, wo mi'-'i stand, were present from Rome, Ringgoi-I, Kingston, Cartersville am! Marietta, necry thing passed off pleasantly, and a debgntmi day was spent. ——' Saw the Calves.—3 his morning we saw the cow of Mr. D. S. Anderson, who-e prolific yield we noticed recently. She had been brought in on Saturday fr-in his plantation, with i er three heifer calves, and now literally lives “in clo ver up to her eyes.” The three little heifcis are lively, frisk, and “as like as two peas,” while the mother of this unusual yield presents a healthy, thriving appearance. Il Dy should not conclude to send her on to Eainum, oi consign her to Wood, as a curiosity, we expect nothing else but he will present us the four animals as a reward for our editorial imitisay Such an infliction might be borne, il our coun try subscribers could only be induced to l ui ■ nish us sufficient fodder to keep them from starving. g@„lthas been ascertained that a larger num her of United States vessels arc now afloat than for the last twenty years. Other vesscsl may be fitted out in three or four v-eks. There is* however, a deficiency of lieutenants, midship men, masters, and me deal officers, as well as seamen—the law limiting the last named to 8,500 men. A Homespun I’aktv.- Col. Donald, <f I - ake county, recently gave a novel party t<» 11"' young people of his neighborhood. '1 he t ickets sent to each young lady required that Mm should come dressed in Mi si -appi manibareii cd apparel,in the manufacture of which she must in some way assist. Below we give a description of this formida ble battery with a very fair cut, repre senting its outlines, for which we are indebted to Mi. B. A. Randaß, who is not only a Printer, an Engraver and Painter, but an universal ge nius. ' The dcscripti n, as credited, is from the Charleston Mercury. X <. i rwc f 1 -1 p.d -Td' - . I This unique work, a section of which is given in our cut, was built under the direction of Major I’. F. Stevens Superintendent of the Citadel Academy, and aelrccts attention, chiefly owing to its simple but massive construction. 1 pine J-'gs. The roof is of the same material, over which dovetailed bars of railroad iron of. the T pattern are laid from top to bottom, al ' diicl . riveted down in the most s cure man ner. On the fremt it pK-sents an angle of about thirty degrees. There are three port holes, which open and close with iron shutters of the heaviest description. When on-. n, the muzzles of the Colurnbiads fill up the space completely. The recoil of the gun enables the shutters to be closed instantly. It is a'-. c crted; on high military authority, that this imflined plane will effectually resist gyns of the heav iest calibre—first, because no direct s.iot can stiike it except at an angle which would cause the ball to glance; second, because its power of resistance is sulficiout to withstand the fall of the heaviest shells. 'Die Columbian guns, with which this novel batt- ry is cquir mo bear on the south wall of Sumter, the line of fire being an angle of about thirty-five degrees. This is not, of course, considered favorable for broaching, but owing to the fact that the wall is loop holed for musketry throughout its entire length which of course, weakens it a great deal, the effect of shot upon it would, we think, even at the distance of I 1 50yards/effect a bi--m h with in a reasonable time.— (.'iMrliston Mercury.
