Georgia U inc.
Airs T. Stephens has presented us vm’ ! a
bottle of Georgia wine made by herself, from
grapes grown on the farm of Mr. Stephens
adjacent to Marietta We do not profess to
be judges of the article, buf.it is pronounced
by those who are, to be of excellent quality.
May Day.
The anniversary called together at the In
stitute Hall a large number of the young la
dies of Marietta with Cadets oi the Institute
and invited guests. The occasion was mark
ed by crowning a Queen of May, with suit
able addresses and a social evening party.
Miss Sanges’ School.
The pupils of Miss Sanges’ School celebra
ted the first of May by addresses at the Court
House and a picnic at Connell s Hall. The
children, most of them quitcjyoung, acquitted
themselves, as we undersand, very well, and
all passed oil pleasantly.
The Virginia Delegates.
We learn that the Virginia Delegates to
Congress at Montgomery passed through At
lanta on yesterday morning. They were call
ed upon and made stirring addresses. Vir
ginia now occupies a noble and commanding
position.
Cobb Mountaineers.
The Cobb Mountaineers, James I’. Cooper
Captain, went yesterday into encampment
one and a half miles from Maiietta, near the
Seceders’ Church, where they will remain for
purpose of drill till called into service.
Provision Supply.
The Southern press is urging the impor
tance of a large provision crop. This should
not be neglected. Georgia is now well sup
plied. It should be kept so by every avail
able means. The W. &A. 11. Road for eight
consecutive weeks brought from Chattanooga
from one hundred to one hundred fifty car
loads of provisions per day. AV e have thus
from eighty to a hundred millions pounds oi
food brought into the State in two months
time. Making all proper allowances for the
portion carried through Georgia and there is
now left an enormous quantity ol imported
Bacon,Corn,Flour, &c remaining. And to this
the large quantity remaining from our own
crops and with ordinary prudence and the
blessing of heaven there will be no scarcity.
The Wheat harvest will commence in a very
few weeks, and if no disaster befals it, there
will be a most abundant one. But our (ar
mors should use every available means to a l 1
to the production of provisions of every kind
for their own consumption, the v tints oi tin n
neighbors and the, supply of our soldiers and
their families.
Advice to Volunteers. — Hou to V/' pare
for the Campaign. — A writer, who signs him
self “An Old Soldier,” gives thefollovvii g ad
vice to young soldiers :
1. Remember that in a campaign more
men die from sickness than by the bul
let.
2. Line your blankets niith one thivkne a
of brown drilling. This adds but four ounces
in weight, and doubles the warmth.
3. Buy a small India rubber blanket (only
sl. 50) to lay on the ground or to throw over
your shoulders when oh guard duty dining
a rain storm. Most of the eastern tr<> >ps are
provided with these. Straw to lie on is m t
always to be had.
4. The best military hat in use is the light
colored soft felt: the crown being sufficiently
high to allow space for air over the brain.
You can fasten it up as a continental in '.. A
weather, or turn it down when it is wet or
very sunny.
5. Let your beard grow, so as to | mteet the
throat and lungs.
G. Keep your entire person clear. tb’r pre
vents fevers und bowel complaints in warn
climates. Wash your body each a; ,it ] s
siblo. Avoid strong e 41' o and. oily meat.
Gen. Scott said that the too li«o use oi
these (together with neglect in keepii the
skin clean) cost many a soldi r his lite in
Mexico.

after resignation he was waited on by a com

the city by a specified short time.
It was Mr. Lamar’s desire and intention to
leave the city, and his resignation was with
reference to this, but the critical illness of
his wife —a fact that must have been known
to some of the mob—prevented an early re

He informed the mob committee that he
could not and would not leave at their orders,
