HATTERAS INLET.
As the attention of most of our read
ers will be drawn to the map, to find
the position of this place, and as it is
down on but few ifany of them, we will
and describe its location. On nearly
every map Ocracoke Inlet will be found
and about eighteen miles North of that
is situated ITa 'teras Inlet, which xx e
I'.elieve is a new channel having cut its
way through Ihe quicksand quite tecent
ly. It will admit vessels from 10 to 13
feet draft, l>u f inside there is a swash
xvhich xvill Uoxv only 7feet to go over
Ocracoke bar lias about tiie same water
but the swash inside not so much, hence
Ihe superiority of Hatteras Inlet. Ihe
batteries (for we learn there are two)
which fought the action noticed by tel
egraph this morning', are situated on the
South end of the Island on xvhich Cape'
Hatteras Inlet—the South side not be
ing fortified. The importance of Hatter
as Inlet and Ocracoke Baris in conse
quence of those channels being the out
lets toon ext 'nsive district of country
now that Norfolk is blockaded, an 1
should the enemy be properly provided
xvitli light draught steamers heavily
armed he might do infinite mischief by
going' up the sound and rivers. The
matter should be looked after forthwi h
and the enemy routed before he lias time
to strenglqen himself.
Compelled to Fight.—Two resigned
officers of the United States army p is
sed through Nashville on the 12th, on
their way to Richmond, who were im
pressed into service at the battle of Ma
nassas, and compelled to light against
the South. The Union, from xvhich we
learn the r.bove says:
These med had just, returned from tlieir
coinands in the far West, and were or
dered to the command of dragoons in
the battle of the 21st. They tendered
resignation, but .these xvere declined,
am! they xvere ordered to go into the
Hattie ;pa list, their xvill '1 hex’ were
not ordered up to the front of the bat
tle until near its close. Their men did
not fire a gun but eighteen of them
were killed ami wounded, After the ' at
tic they applied for a fm lough, which
was granted, when they went to Louis
ville Ky., ami thence forwarded their
resignation, to enter the Confederate
service, fhey have gone to Richmond.
Brought Amu r r.v thg Wai:.— The
I’iiiladelphia /'/ess, speaking of the fall
trade, says:
“Trade this (all will bo light. Tn
many instances, firms which a year
ago had a right to be consideicd weal
thy, arc to day hopelessly insolvent;
ami, in our large cities, it is no < xag
geration to say that a m ij irity of their
mercantile Imuses have been compelled
t > yield to the storm of general suspen
sion.”
