;;()V. BROWN A Xl> THE TAKING OF
F-iRT
The Milledgeville ‘Union’ of Tuesday
last has an edi ori d, in which the fol
low ing is given among’ other “reasons
yvhy G 1 v Brown shoui l bs ie-eected: ’
“ii. Before Fort Pulaski had been oc
cupied by Federal troops, and before
■ Georgia had acted, Gov Brown risked
s ex cry thing and boldly seized the Fort
and occupied it by Georgia troops.—
> This timely’ ict has k .pt die foot of the
■ invader off t’ne soil ol Georgia. In the
i adjoining State of South Carolina, on
1 one side? dm Federal troops go' posses
sion of Fort Sumter, and it cost a bat
tle and the expenditure of even a mil-
- lion of dollars to get it back. In the
-tale of Florida, on die other sole, the
Federal troops got possession of Port
s Picki “iis, and it has taken nearly ten
r thousand men to guard them, and has
cost but little shorr of five millions of
dollars, an I we are not yet in posses
sion of the Fort, while in Georgia half
a regiment in Fort Pulaski Ir.lds it
1 quietly and defies Lincoln’s troops to
i attempt to enter. 'I he Governor’s
yvorst enemies are compelled to admit
that Georgia is indeb cd to him alone
for her present proud position in th s
’ res .cel, and that. Lincoln’s 'roops would
» now, in all probability be in the Fort,
, and a large army of oury forces lying
around i; a an immense cost, yvith a
prospect ot he.ivy loss of life in retak
ing it, but for tins bold, deci led, fear
less action.”
While we have no disposition to dis-
I p irage Gov. Broyvn, nor in the slightest
flegrce to detr >ct Irmn iiis just merits,
we are unwilling’ that, those who are
endeavoring, regardless of the claims of
others or the wishes of the people, to
»’ive a life-estate in the G überatorial
ofii t, shall claim f r him credit to
v which he is not entitled. Gov. brown
,[ is not cnti’led o the credit of lia ving
