WAR NEWS AND RUMORS.
The only rumor'that his exercised
the imagination of our citizens lor two
days past, relates to the crossing of
the Potomac by 10,000 Federal soldiers
at Occoquan Prince William county
We have information that our niili'ary
started from Fredericksburg and that
Cql. Ransom, of North Carolina marched
thirteen miles with his command with
a view ol driving back the enemy when
a courier met them with the intelli
gence, there was no enemy to attack;
that a small r connoitering party cross
ed the river and ret limed a brief sojourn .
Ou hearing- these fuels onr forces relin
quished the expedi ion. So much for
the gieat Occoquan excitement.
Th*.* news of Gen Jacks ms victory
at Greenbrier river is confirmed. I he en
emy had been strongly enternched and
fortified on the top of ( heat Mountain
and our troops cons dering it hopeless
touttack such a position have tried ev
ery means to get the f’ederals out but
they persistently refused to accent the
challenge. It is probable that Gen.
Reynolds designed to surprise Gen.
Jackson’s command when he made the
attack on the 3d ins-. At daylight on
the morning'of that day he came down
from the mount.tin with 5,000 men and
drove in our pickets. Ihe battle com
menced at S o’clock A. M. and raged
four and a hall hours when the enemy,
retreated with a reported loss of 1,500
in killed upd wounded. Our loss was
four killed and some ten or twelve
woundi d. The enemy are said have
employed six pieces of cannon, but
could net stand the teriible fire of Shu
maker’s battery. I lie troops engaged
on our side we arc informed, were the
Ist and Georgia and the 23*1 Vir
ginia regiments; but cannot vouch for
the ac.nracey ol this statement. They
numbered not more then 2,500 in all
Onr troops Hushed with victory, are
said to have pursued the retreating Fed
eralists across Greenbrier river, and we
hope to learn that there were some sub
stantial restd's in the way of captured
stores and munitions.
