Cincinnati Emptorer says there are now
not less than 40,000 Federal and State
troops in Kentucky, ami that the num
ber will soon be increased to < 0,000

pared for the largest force the enemy
can bring against them tn Kentucky.

Nashville, Oct 19.—Passengers from Bowling
Green to-day report an engagement on the 17th
at Greensburg on Green River 30 miies above
Munfordsville between the Confederate forces
under Gen. Hardee. 1.500 strong and the Feder
al forces under Goneral Ward 2.000 strong at
Camp Andy Johnson. The Federals were re
pulsed after.a sharp engagement. No other
pa"ticulars brought.
A dispatch to the N Y. Tribune of the Bth
says Gen. .Mitchell will be put in command of au
expedition to drive the Confederates out frotm
Cumberland Gap and then carry the xvar into
Tennessee.
Richmond. Oct 20.—One Federal vesns.et was.
burned on the Potormc yester ay by hot shot
from our batteries near Evansport,
Breckenridge Humphrey Marshall and Wm.
Preston ot Kentucky are here.
Nashville, Oct. 20.—The Cincinnati Enquir
er, 12th October, says the federal campaign in
Western Virginia is ended for the winter, For
age cannot be procured, and transportation is
difficult.
Rosencranzhas fallen back to Mountain Cave
13 miles west of Gauley. He has only 6,000
effective men and nearly 2,000 sick.
Rosencranz will probably be detached and
sent to Kentucky, leaving a small force behind
check the Confederates.
Richmond, Oct. 19.-Passengers from the bat
teries near Evansport, state that there are about
30 vessels below the batteries aud seven above
them. They are fearful of passing. Some es
cape up and down on foggy nights, but none by
daylight.
The federals are preparing to make an attack
on Roanoke Island. They- have 8,000 troops at
Hatteras, beside gun boats, barges and floats.—
Gen. Mansfield is in command.
