Fight at Leesburg.
M in.issa. 22.—The Con.ederates gained
a brilliant victory yesterday, near Leesburg, on
the Potomac river,
Gen. Evans, with 2,500 mon. engaged the
Federalists, under Gen. Stone, with 10,000 men I
The battle continued through the day
The loss of the Confederates wes 300.
The Federal loss was 400 killed and’wounded,
including Senator Baker, of Oregon, 520 pris
oners, and 390 di owned, trying to_ re-cross the
Potomac.
We took three pieces’ of cannon,'6oo small
arms, with a considerable "amount of ammuni

Richmond, Va., Oct. 22. —Special despatches
from Manassas say that the Federal loss at the
battle on the Potomac, near Leesburg, on yes
terday, (Monday) was from 490 to 500 killed
and wounded, and 309 drowned in the Potomac,
while attempting to re-cross the river.
The Confederate loss was 300 killed and woun
ded. It was a great victory for the Conleder.

Richmond. Va.. Oct. 22.—The following offi
cial intelligence was received at the War De
pnrtment here to-day. It is dated at Centre
ville. October 22d :
Col. Evans reports that lie was engaged most
of the day yesterday with twelve Reg’ments and'
five battalions of the enemy, near the Potomac
river. They had crossed the river under cover
of their Artillery fire,but Col. Evans drove them
back, with a heavy loss in killed on their p irt.
and took 209 prisoners. Col. Evins had four
regiments and five guns.
Col. Baker (U. S. Senator from Orego ) was
killed. ""Col. Cogswell and ten other Federal of
ficers together with six pieces of Artillery, weio
cap'ured by our forces.
Washington. Oct. 23.—Secretary Seward has
addressed a communication to the Governors
ofthe Federal iStates. intimating that European
agents of the Confederate States —may involve
the United States in a foreign war, and urges
the.several Governors to pltu e their coasts in a
proper state of defense. He considers that the
Federal Government will pay a proportionable
p irt of expenditures for such purposes.
ZiiCHMOND, Oct. -Col. Thus. Jordan. As-
Fistant Adiut-mt. Gen. tele r .j h -d from Centre
ville at 19.1 o'clock last night that about 600
prisones and 1.209 stand of arm- were taken in
the fight near Lee-burg on Monday, and the
enemy’s loss was between 1.090 t i l 1.200.
On the Confederates side the Infantry only
were employed.
Our forces engaged were BthVa.. and the 17th
and LSth Mississippi Regiments. The >3tb Mis
sissippi was held in reserve.
Intellig ■nee from Evansport reports the re
cent capture of two schooners loaded with hay,
cement, wool and oilier articles of great value
to ns. and the sinking of a Federal tug by our
batteries, as well as other injuries to the Feder
al vessels.
Beauregard's report of the battle of Manas
sas. 21st July, is received at the War Depart
ment. It is quite le igthy. with voluminous re
ports. Soma days will elapse before copies can
be obtained lor publication.

or to estimate the number of the drowned.
