Soldie s: The appearances surround ing us indicate that we will have a light in a few days, perhaps in one day. - We have !» en mistaken bo often, how (•ver, that I will not venture to prophe sy with perfect confidence. 1, like yourselves, nave never been in battle. It will be us novel a sensa tion to me as to yon. But by inquiry among those who have seen and felt it, I have learned some things that perh.ivs would be useful and interesting t.«» you The great object our enemies seem to have in view, is to invent some means <>r to find some plan by which thev can kill us without bein f hint the'i.selves It we adopt some m<‘tlm !to circumvent this single feature of their 'actics, they nre helpless, and we have th m at our in M cy. The sole hing therefore ncces farv, is t‘> g*’ op close. \'Vc ‘i'e told tlitr some of the rifles in your hands J?di UH a man half a mile; don’t you believe if, it J* all stull. No gti'i will kdl a man tn.’t lat, am i thev could, no one can hit a man thiee hundred yar'.M with any certainty.— You go up within a humk'f’d yards or i less, and then your in irkmanship will i tell. Get close to them, stand linn, ;;!.»»> I well, and not a single regiment they have will stan 1 before you live min- UU*H, But their artillery—their terrible big guns- we hear they have two hundred of the finest pieces in the world. Well, I hope it is rue-we wan the guns-we are entitle Ito tluim—w • know lr>w to use them, and’bey don’t—-and Providence never intended that line cannon, m»r any thing else, should be held by those wlh> understood not their use. Alt< diligent, inquiry, I can hear <»f but one single man on our side killed by their cannon al the bat le of Manassa Plains. Providence fought with us .. t Manassa. He will light with usagiin if we are brave. He loves valor, and He loves a valiau soldier, lie will help us,but will not drop cannon d* wn to us out< f tft<> skies, lie expects to help us by pu'ting it in to the hearts of our enemies to bring the cannon in our reach, and then He expects us to t ike them! Another marked feature of the light, if we get into one, you will find to |>e the whistling of the shells. Our enem tea Imve sacci’edeil admirably in con- Ntnicting harmless instruments which make a curious and unpleasant n use, and it has this wonderful {H'culiaritv it seems obe coming straight at eve j rv man who hears it. Now, we km w il can’t be coming at but one man, at most two; ami the truth is, it j s c iuing at nobody. You have nothing t*» Ao pay close attention to your hind sight, and the whistling of the shells, will :»f era little, become rather a sin ill milter in the grand drama you are ae ing. The great implement of death in war. y >u hold in your hands- the musket mid bayonet and your ene mies have none better or more terri ble. Another feature in the fight will Le fire falling of the killed and wounded. It is a trving thing to a man to see his friend fall by his wide, and our first im pulse is to carry him to the rear But ivmembcr the l*est way to save your wounded friend is not for five «»r six to leave the rmiks, »ud thus weaken and break ViHir line Illis will insure his dvuttuetiun and yony own by h«» tramp Hng and bayonets of y<mr enemies THE MARIETTA S E MI-W EEK L Y ADVOCATE I Your wonn led friends ought to be in ' the rear, and you ought to be between i them and the ‘foe. Now, the plainest i and most effectual way to do ’his is. ■p, close up your ranks and advance on the enemy. J Soldiers! You fight for vour liberty voiir country, your wives and your children; you cannot afford to le de feated. Your fate would be hewers of wood and drawn s of water to an ene*. my we abhor. Your enemies b night with a price—fifty dollars per head bounty, and largo pay, induce them to enter the ranks to destroy your rights. Can you yield to such aloe? W ith one powerful blow let us crush them, and return home to our families and firesides?. <p» «.».■ SECRETARY CAMERON HEAVY ON FREMONT—HIS ACTION RifPlDi- A TED. A special dispatch to the Tribune stays : Before leaving St. Louis, the Secretary of War, by lei ter, ordered General Fremont to discontinue, as un necessary, his field work around the city, as also those which he is erecting around Jefferson (’ity. Also to suspend works on the barracks he is building around his residence, ami his body guard of 300 cavalry. He also ordered him to employ all the money in the hands of the disbursing officeis in the current expenses of his army in Missouri, and to let all his debts in St. L. ms, amouu - ing to $4,500,000, remain unpaid until they can be properly examined and sent to Washington for set lenient. lie also ordered that the disbursing officers should disbars • their funds, and not transfer th -in to irresponsible persons, who do not hold commis-ions from the Preside! t, and are not under bonds.— Also, that hereafter all contracts to be made, be made by the regular disburs ing officer of the army. Gen. Fremont was also informed that payment would not be made to officers appointed by him. It is said there are two hundred of these whose commis sions do not bear the President’s signa tore a.id that Paymaster zxndrews had been vet bally instructed not to make such paymen.s. Special except! ns were made in favor of officers ot volun teers. The number of forts planned by Gen Fremont for the defense of St. Lous is eleven. From the Knoxville (Terin. > Duly Register. THE NORTH DISHONORED. ’ The whole of tho North is, in fact, : dishonored by the advances that have j been made o Garibaldi; and the ter ! rilde humiliation which Mr. Seward • shuddered at when the idea of English l mediation in the American quarrel was ' broached, sinks into insignificance com- ■ pared with the death-L low dealt by this ; grandiloquent politician at ’he pride and self-consciousness of every Ameri j can patriot What must be ’he effect i of such manifest want of faith and cour ; age in th > Cabinet at Washington upon | Generals and soldiers. It is, in sac , much like the fa.-hionable “not at home” to an unwel come visior. As it is President Lin coln may hug himself in the belief that but for a twing of rheum tism, Garibaldi might have immortalized him and hauled him down to grateful pos teritv a second Wsshington.
