W. A. FRAZER. July 22d. 1861 * f HOUR, H dav. and 11 dav Clocks. coeap • >( > at ’ FRAZER’S INTERESTING FROM PADUCAH* The Memphis Appeal has a letter f.om Paducah, Ky., dated the 28th ulti mo, which gives some interesting in formation in regard to affairs in that place. We copy as follows : I’adiich is at this time occupied by about 6,500 troops, two-thirds or three* f.Hirtlis of whom are Germans. They are tolerably well equipped and drilled, and are bet er officered than is general ly admitted concerning the Federal troops. Very little reliance, however, is placed upon the troops by their own officers, and upon every occasion when an attack on Paducah is expected, the general spirit innnifested'by the soldiers is of great dullness, not to say coward ice. Some exaggerations have been enter* tallied about, the fortifications construe* ted about the place. 1 lie breastworks small, and mounting only two heavy guns—thirty-two pounders—the bal ance being six and twelve pounders.—* The ditches are only five feet wide and f -ur ami a half feet deep. The greatest oi stack* to be encountered by an as* saulting force is an abattis of trees, which extend from three to five hundred yards in half circle in frontof the whole work, giving a clear range to their gims, and making t ! e obstruction com* plete against a cavalry attack. That it would cost some lives now to take the place, is undoubtedly true, but, that it could have been done a month ago. without any heavy loss, is equally true, But to consider the feat as impossible, or the oljject as not worth the cost of the Undertakin *•, is ralher beyond my understanding, and such an idea favors too much the plans and views die Fed orals officers have, to be accepted. The accumulation of stores ami pro visions here is immense—wor b at least two millions of dollars ; and within tho last few days some illllibcf has oeeli purchased for the purpose < f building winter quarters. Large numbers ot mules have been bought and are daily being' trained to harness. The hospital is used as nn arsenal, and every thing looks as if this point intended to be? made the headquarters ol a laige army to operate in Wes ern Kentucky and down the river. r\ Reign of Terror in New York.— Money or IJlood.— The Raleigh (N. C.) liegisler says : A Southern gentleman, who has re cently esc q»ed fr< in New York, reports that Seward, on a recent visit to that citv, informed die bankers and other capitalists that they must, subscribe ei ther money or their l>lo< d to die Gov ernment loan—that there was no use in mincing matters - that the simple ques tion was whether tbe Govei nment can get money without blood. The Bab boon despotism is fast culminating to the height of the highest atrocities of the French Revolution. Basriles are dotted in the North, “Icliresde cachet” »ve in vogue, a system ol espionage whi< It Fouche might have enw’ed, is in opera tion, the habeas corpus is suspended, and soon, no doiil.t, “the Maiden’s Daugh ter,” (or gnilloiim*)*will raise and lower her bloody hands on prostrate necks. — And all this go< s on in a countiy pr<)-« fessing not only to claim liberty for it self, but also the emancipatit nos the slaves of the South ! <<a> e» . Salt. —The Macon Telegraph of Sat urday says ; Th s article is rising, as a nierclr nt remarked yesterday, at the rale of about one dollar per day. It is thought that it will comm nd S2O per sack before the cml of this month. One of our firms, with the design ol preventing specula tion positively refuses to sell more than five sacks to one man, and he must bn a planter. In New Orleans, fifty sacks is as much as can be bought by one man. Where is Professor Tlmmassey ? The Mercury has already furnished tin* information as to Prof. 1 homassey’S whereabouts. He is not idle. His val uable services have been engaged by one <>f th ’ most enterprising Houses in < liarlcston for fiieeroction of Salt Works <>n a gr- ml scab*. The article, howev*- er, cann >t be made in a day, m.r in a week ; but, as we have said before, about Christmas a full supply, at rea sonable prices, may be exoected from the Sou h Carolina Salt Works iho manufacture of salt requires a period of about sixty days. The South (’arolina Suh Works have been in progress about bait that time. — Charlotun Mercury. Significant Signs. —The citizens of A ngusta held a meeting on Saturday night las. to tak-i into consideration the price <>f provisions in that market ami to (h-vise measures to rid that city, of extor ioners and peeulative specula'* tors. A comm'ttee was appointed bx draft resolutions, and the meeting' ad joiiriied to Satur-I iy next We should m t be surpris d to see their examplo imitated throughout the S ate.
