MR RUSSELTAS LETTER-
The Lbtidon Tinier has -another letter
from Mr. IJttssell, in which he intima os
that the < liny will exercise the coil
trolling 1 power before long, and that a
military dictator will wield the power
of goveiiiment. Hedtaws a graphic
parallel Between the opposing Generals,
Mc'.'lcllan and Beauregard, and sketch
es the respective situ itioh's of the two
armies now s'linding face to face with
each other on the banks of the Potomac.
We subjoin the most interesting paar
sage of his letter :
BEAUREGARD AND M’uI.EPI.A.N CUMI’AREII.
When I had the pleasure of conver
sing with General McUleliau for the
first time, he asked me several ques-’
tions ; with evident interest and friend
ly curios’fy-—not unusual on the part
of Generals in reference to their antago
nists -respecting General Beating’;.rd.
In his case there was all the more rea
son for such inquiries, in lhe fact that
th y were old fellow students and class
mates. To my mind (litre is something
of resemblance between the men. Both'
are below the middle height. 'They are
both squarely built, and famed for mus
cular power since their college days.—
Beauregard, indeed, is lean and thiir
ribbed; McClellan is full and round;
with a Napoleonic tendency to embon
point, subdued By incessant exercise.— -
Beauregard sleeps little; McClellan’s
temperament requires a full share of
rest ; both arc spin 6 and Spartan in’
diet, studious, quiet. Beauregard is
ru'her saturnine and,if not melancholic,
is of a grim gayety ; Me lellan is gen-'
ial even in his reserve. The density of
the hair, ami the squareness ot the jaW;
the lirmness and regularity of the teeth,
ami the outlines’(if the features, arc
points o! similarity in l oth which would
be more striking if Beauregard were
not of tiie (rue Louisiana Creole tint;
while McClellan is lair complexioned.—
Beau regard has a dark, dull, studeui’s
eye, the dullness of which arises, how
ever, from its formation; for it is lull of
tire, ami ils glances arc quick t.hd
searching. McClellan l.as a deep, clear
eye, into which you can look tar and
deep, while yotf feel i searches tar and
deep into you.
Beauregard has something of preten
ttimi in In’s manner- not hauteur, but a
folding armed, meditative Gott of air
which seems to say, ‘’Don’t disturb me;
I’m thinking’ of military movements”—
McClellan seems to be always at leis
ure ; But you feel at the sam 1 time you
ought not to intrude too much upon’
him, even when you seek in vain for the
groumls of dial, impression in anything
that he is d ting or saying-. Beaure
gard is more subtle, crafty, and astute;
McClellan is more comprehensive, more
learned, more impressionable. Beaure
gard is a I borough soldier, McClellan
may prove he is a great general. The
former only looks to military conse
quences and disregirds popular mani
festations; the latter respects the opin
ions of the outer worl 1, ai'i'd’*’ees politi
cal as well as military results in what
he orders. They are both the creatures
of accidmit -o far as their present posi
tions are ci neerned. If remains to be
seen if cither can control the current of
events, and if. in either the artillery—
man or the cavalry oflicer of the old
United States Army, then-, is the stuff
around which history is moulded, such'
as that of which the artilleryman of
Brienne --f the leader of -he Ironsides'
was made.
