Flow TO WIN BATI’LES--KFFECT IVE'XESS OF THE B IYOSIit The Ne.M Orleans Bee } in anelitorial oh the surest ma mer ol winning a bat tle in our present contest witli the North, has the following truthful and complimentary remarks upon the great skill and success with which our brave Southern soldiers use the bayonet: Our boys have already displayed their aptitude in the use of the bayo net. VVc learn from authority worthy of confidence that during the memora ble and glorious combat at Leeslitiig, the musket at short distances and the bayonet were alone used The latter weapon proved itself highly servicea ble in several sweeping and irresisti ble charges. The enemy never waited Io cross bayonets with us, but shrunk terrified from the gleam of the terrible weapon. They attemp cd more than unco to make bayonet charges thenm selves, but were again forced to fall back by the incessant volleys of mus ketry with which they were receiv ed. In fact the Southern soldiers have not alone mere animal courage: that is equally an attribute of the North, and is common to almost all nations. 1 hey are peculiarly distinguished by J heir impetuosity, fire recklessness of Ide, and determination to do or die Such men possess the stuff of which hr rocs arc made, and every individual com posing our armies adds his own pai ticular individuality and energy to that of die inass. '1 he best thing to be done with soldiers of this stamp, is to put them in situations where they can not L<c held afar off by the powei of <u tillery, and from whence th<*y can be hurled’ like thunderbolts against die lop. The experience at Leesburg proves not merely that the Cci.federa'cs un derstand, and can practice charges with the bayonet, but that the ddmmiil use of that fearful weapon is one < t the most certain means of routing the foe. At Leesburg they were literally forced in to the river in endeavoring to avoid die thrust of the bayonet. We hope most earnestly that the lesson will not lie lost on rhe Confederate Commanders hereafter. ■■<>- Wheke the Cheat B.vrri e \\ ill Take Place.—The Washington correspondent of the New York IPor/t/ speculates as foil ws: “It is now conceded that the first great battle in a ivance will probably take place at Centreville. ’1 he rebel army is massed between that point and Bull Run in force. Prom the cautious manner of McClellan’s advance they see that it will not do to give up Centreville Heights without, a struggle as tb-y may be used to shell the bat cries on the old battleground. Prom the present rate of advance, it may be a week before Gen. McClellan reaches that point There may, however, be a dash in another direction as a diverson, but now it looks tis though there will be a ser es of battles —at Cen reville, Bull Run, and Manassas. Withequal brav ery and even less men, our immense advantage in rifled cannon and arms ought to give us the victory.’’ NEW PAINT SI I Ol’. THE undersigned having permanently located in Marietta with a view of carrying on the PAINTING BUSINESS in all its various departments, has taken the Room over the Workshop nf W. R. McCown, on Decatur Street. He would respectfully call the attention of citi irens ami others to the same, and earn- tly solicit a liberal share of patronage, J?-©-All work done with promptness and dispatch. Jan 18, i.v. I. N.
