From page §B
stellar evening, and pres
sure from Garrett Stokeling
on quarterback Aaron Black
put Hawkinsville at 3rd
and-13 to begin the second
quarter.
Black began that quarter
finding Kameron Riley (com
mitted to Georgia Tech) on a
completion to the 50. With
a late hit out of bounds,
Hawkinsville was on the
Panther 35-yard-line.
It was on third down from
the 32 that Hayward timed
Black’s throw just right for
the interception and return
down the Devil sideline to
score.
“They throw the ball a
lot, and I was just at the
right place at the right time,
in the right coverage,” said
Hayward.
Bill Freeman followed with
the first of four PAT kicks at
10:49 until halftime.
Hawkinsville took its next
possession and turned it
into a 72-yard scoring drive
in eight plays with a first
down catch of 20 yards by
Riley and a 16-yard pickup
by Grace.
Black, from the Panther
33, hit Shannon Williams on
a slant that netted 24 yards
to the 9.
Linebacker Kanorris Davis
threw his blocker aside to
stop Hawkins ville for second
down on the 10. On third
down from the 15, Black
threw up top towards Riley
on the left side and - despite
Hayward’s one-on-one cov
erage - the Devils had the
touchdown at 7:23.
However, the PAT kick
would miss wide left to keep
Perry in front 7-6.
The Panther first half
offensively was a struggle
to sustain long drives in the
new spread formation that
saw Hayward take every
snap Friday from the shot
gun.

big junior Johnnie Farms,
Hayward had Perry’s big
gest play of the first period
on a 30-yard completion to
a wide-open Cody Mahler
on the Hawkinsville 26. But
after another first down on
the 13, the drive had a bad
snap and ended with the
interception.
Perry’s first touch of the
second period on offense
saw Brandon Golden gain 36
yards on two carries to the
Red Devil 25. Trey Smith,
on third down from the 21,
was called out of bounds
while making a catch near
the side of the end zone.
With a missed field-goal try
of 37 yards, the Devils had
the ball back still down by
one.
Jonathan Clowers and
Stokeling put Hawkinsville
in third-and-long situations.
The Devil punting game had
its struggles, though, and
a bad snap led to Brandon
Smith forcing a fumble on
the 12.
The 12-yard field became
an 18-yard field due to a
penalty, but on third-and-16
Jacorey Lane made a jug
gling catch on the 1 with
22 seconds left. Hayward,
still in the shotgun, kept the
football and scored. Freeman
upped the lead for halftime
to 14-6.
Perry still wasn’t able to
follow up on great plays to
start the second half. The
first was a kickoff return
of 41 yards from Brandon
Grace at the Hawkinsville
45. From there Hayward hit
Felder on an out route, and
Felder churned up field 23
yards to the 22.
But the Panthers went
backwards from there before
losing the ball on downs at
the 18.
Hawkinsville’s Grace
busted through right tackle
for 42 yards to the Panther
30. On third down, Black’s
play-action continued to
hurt Perry with a catch from
Riley on the 10.

Black’s fake and brought the
quarterback down on the 15.
The Devils would settle for a
24-yard field goal making it
a 14-9 game.
The visitors got the football
back quickly at the Panther
43 on a 13-yard punt. After
a first-down gain to the 33,
Jecavesia Hayward took
over the line of scrimmage
with two tackles for a loss,
including a 10-yard sack on
the 44.
Early in the fourth, the
Perry defense came through
SPORTS
again as Kaderius Felder,
from the secondary, read a
pitch play for a loss on the
Hawkinsville 25. The punt
went high in the air and
came down five yards from
the snap on the 36.
On third down from the
31, Casey Hayward swung
the ball out to Akeen Felder,
who fought his way through
defenders to open space and
the end zone with 7:03 left

with the kick to put the

Perry quarterback, Casey Hayward, stiff arms a Hawkinsville player, as he runs around
the end.

was faced with fourth down

Golden was Perry’s lead
