♦ SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 2007 2B My Bears blank Coffee By MATTHEW BROWN Journal Sports Writer Brianna Hancock earned her sixth pitching win in 2007 as the Houston County High Bears won for the sixth time Thursday 6 : 0 at Coffee County High. Houston, which lost the day before HOUSTON COUNTY LADY BEARS Houston County 6, Coffee County 0 to Warner Robins 5-2 in a makeup home game, got back in the win column for the Region 1-AAAAA softball stand ings at 4-1. Hancock allowed just four hits to the Trojans in Douglas Thursday. She walked two and struck out six. “We had a pretty good defensive day,” said coach Angela Crawford. “We had a lot of singles. Everybody hit.” Danielle Burkett was the only Bear to have a multi-hit game with two safeties, and she was the only one to hit for extra bases. The team plays again today in the Watermelon Invitational in Cordele. NORIHSIDE From page iB and Heather Langston each had three hits to pace the Lady Eagles. On Thursday, it was Sarah Purvis’ time to take to the mound. Against the Lady Bulldogs she struck out 10 while improving her record to 5-2. Northside is now 8-2 overall. Offensively, the Lady Eagles struck for four in the second and its last two in the third. Leading them at the plate were sisters Holly and Heather Langston. Holly was 2-for-2 with an RBI, while Heather was 2-4 with an RBI. PERRY From page iB who went 4-for-4. “She’s been killing the ball lately,” Sans said. “I put her in as a DH and she’s just been hit ting well.” Coupled with her perfor mance was that of Jenna Clark, Taylor Tucker and Alexis Ricks, the three of which combined on the mound for a no-hitter. LADY PANTHERS 28, AMERICUS-SUMTER COUNTY 0 Egad! Zounds! Gadzooks! Those and other expletives don’t begin to explain Perry’s 28-0 win over Americus- Sumter County in non-region softball Tuesday evening. In a game that ended after two and a half innings thanks to the mercy rule, Perry’s Lady Panthers sent 19 bat ters to the plate in the first inning and 20 in the second, meanwhile racking up 13 hits and taking advantage of 16 walks and five Americus errors. “We’ve got a lot of games this week we should win,” said Perry head coach Jeff Sans, “But we have to take care of business.” The win evened Perry’s record to 5-5 with games against Central on Thursday and then the Watermelon Tournament in Cordele Friday and Saturday before starting the meat of its region schedule the next week against Peach County and Southland. Sans didn’t try to run up the score. He played every one on the bench and held his base runner to one base at a time, but he couldn’t keep his batters from putting metal to ball. “I want them to hit line drives and ground balls,” Sans said. “We don’t want to make mistakes in the field.” Perry’s starting pitcher Katie Claxton allowed two base runners in two innings. WESTFIELD From page iB turned two double plays, but also had two errors. It was an error on a field er’s choice grounder, along with a wild pitch and an infield single, which gave Deerfield-Windsor two run ners in scoring position with one out in the first inning. Gilliam used an off-speed delivery to record her first strikeout, and a groundout ended what would be the visitors’ best scoring threat of the day. Hornet leadoff hitter Mason Moreland had two hits. Her one-out bunt single in the third led to Westfield’s first run. Sydney Smith also had a hit that inning. With two outs, Moreland made a delayed steal attempt Jk -iMMbSWBBK SnMMHvfe a I ENI/Gary Harmon Perry first baseman Ashton Jones fields the ball for the last out in the Lady Panthers’ game at home Tuesday against Americus-Sumter. Americus’ Jayme Gilbert opened the game with a soft grounder she beat out for a hit, but she was erased on a force at second and in a heads-up play, Perry’s first baseman Ashton Jones grabbed the rebound on the overthrow at first to nail Americus’ Sadie Ricketts as she tried to advance to sec ond. Jones threw a strike to shortstop Tiffany James who tagged Ricketts two feet before the second base bag. In the second inning, Claxton walked the first Americus batter who stole second, but Claxton struck out the next two batters and Perry third baseman Kaila Ransom snared a grounder and her throw to first ended the inning. “We as a team are learn ing how to win,” Sans said. “We’re developing a winning mentality. “In every inning, on every pitch, we’re going to get after it.” of third. That induced a wild throw from the Knights allowing Moreland home. Moreland was also heads up from her second base position in turning a fourth inning double play. With a runner on first, Deerfield bunted, and Moreland took the throw at first. She then fired to third base in time to get a second out. Smith also had a second hit as her bunt single began the home sixth. Darryl Ann Thompson bunted her way on base, moving Smith to third so she could score on Gilliam’s ground out. Christine Campbell, an eighth grader playing both catcher and third base, nailed a first-pitch RBI dou ble to center. Moreland was responsible for Westfield’s other dou ble play with a putout and assist to end the game. With that in mind, Sans started substituting in Perry’s half of the second inning, replacing five of the nine starters. Every player on Perry’s roster batted at least twice an inning. Alexis Ricks came on in the top of the third to close out the game. She struck out the first two batters, and sec ond baseman Haley McCarty fielded a slow roller but nailed the batter at first on a close play to end the game. Sans admitted the game wasn’t much of a test for his team, but pointed out that it still helped because his play ers made the plays they had to. Of the thirteen hits, two were sharply hit doubles into the gap, and other 11 hits were ground balls, mostly through the middle. The sole mistake in the field was the over throw at first in the first inning in an attempt to complete a double play, and good play by Jones expunged the mistake.
