Choosing a dog or cat for adoption on a Friday is a prime day because a new lifetime friend and fam ily have three days to get acquainted. This is a good interruption. This past Friday was no exception. I work with the cats so if a volunteer has named a dog, nine times out of 10, I am unaware of the name the dog has been given. Sure enough a young couple showed up to adopt “Tellie”. I looked at the cou ple like a deer in the head lights. I didn’t know who “Tellie” was. I learned that Tellie is a white Jack Russell terrier. After a lengthy conversa tion, I learned this couple found Tellie on Petfinder and had driven from Florida to adopt her. This couple did not care if Tellie “had issues”; she was going home with them. People never cease to amaze me. We were at Pets Mart on Saturday. We took a big black Staffordshire mix. We hadn’t named him yet, knowing he would probably be with us for LINEBERGER From page $B just before he died. I’ve never been able to find the tape. I don’t know what hap pened to it. Recently, my mom thought she had found it. We were so excited! It was going to be wonderful just to hear his voice after all these years. We put it into the cassette player and waited with bated breath. It was organ music. We were both so dis appointed. We wanted so much just to hear his voice. People don’t normally want a “big black dog”. Right? Wrong. A couple took one look at him and Wendy Leonard FOPAS Volunteer bingo! They took the big boy to an aisle to spend some quiet time with him - if that is possible at Pets Mart. The woman sat down Indian-style and this big dog just started giving her kisses. She looked at her husband as if she were a 10- year-old asking: “Can I have him?” This was repeated sever al times. Finally, the “yes” came and again the woman said excitedly, “I can have him!” It was priceless. People never cease to amaze me. In most cases, when some one has found kittens, they bring them to the shelter. But for some unknown rea son this past week, people have called asking how to help the kittens they have found. I had two women asking for bottle feeding instruc- memories of those that have gone on before us. We don’t record the memories of past generations like we should. The only way that-we can improve our society is by learning from our older gen erations and find out what they did wrong and what they did right. Learning from them is the only way that, we can make life better for our children and grand children. Tomorrow, Sept. 9, is Grandparents’ Day. Commemorate this special day by visiting an elderly person. This may be your parent, grandparent, friend, or even neighbor. Take them a small gift. Talk with them about their past. I said to myself “I’m not believing what I am hear ing.” I am so used to hearing “take these.” I told these two women how proud I was that they were willing to tackle such a time-consum ing project. People never cease to amaze me. A woman showed up at Pets Mart with a mamma cat and her two kittens. She had called earlier in the week ask ing for help. Hanna, Perry’s Animal Control officer and a volunteer of the Friends of the Perry Animal Shelter said we could help her with adoption assistance. The requirement before bringing them to Pets Mart is each cat has to be vetted to its age. Those cats were at a vet the next day. Turns out mamma was pregnant again and could not stay, but could go home with her foster mom until she had her kittens. One of the kittens is missing its left foot. Neither kitten got adopted, so their foster mom took them back home. People never cease to amaze me. We are so used to hearing the negative that the posi tive always amazes us.
