First half racing ‘great 5 at Cochran

The first half of the year
started out great at Cochran
Motor Speedway and the
last couple of weeks have
been very wet.
The grand weekend ended
up a soaker at the track.
Dewayne “Flat-out” Johnson
was down from Columbus
with fast time at practice on
Friday night. Stevie “the
ghost” Jones was turning
some fast laps as always.
Jones of Milan has
been on a streak by win
ning the last two races at
Cochran Motor Speedway
and winning at Golden
Isles Speedway Saturday
night after Cochran Motor
Speedway was rained out.
The Grand Weekend has
been rescheduled for Sept.
15. C&C Pawn fcity Late
Models will be battling for
$1,500 to win.
CMS has had 30 different
drivers compete this year in
the 2007 Sunoco Points fund
with Steffan McGlamry of
Warner Robins leading with
1803 points.
A very close second is
Dennis McDaniel with 1795
points. Rounding out the
top five is Keith Edge of
Eastman in third, Wiley
McDaniel fourth and Stevie
Jones with a hard charge
the last couple of races grab -
bing fifth. They still have
three “points” races left
in the 2007 Sunoco Points
Battle.
Also Sept. 15 is the North
Carolina bluegrass group,
The Kickin Grass Band
will be on hand doing the
National Anthem and sev
eral sets at the start of the
show and at intermission.

In 1970, a West Virginia housewife, Marian Lu
cille Herndon McQuade, initiated a campaign
to set aside a special day just for Grandparents.
Through concerted efforts on the part of civic,
business, church, and political leaders, this cam
paign expanded statewide. The first Grandpar
ents Day was proclaimed in 1973 in West Vir
ginia by Governor Arch Moore. But, in 1973,
a resolution in the Senate ended up languishing

claiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as Na
tional Grandparents Day. The proclamation was
signed by President Jimmy Carter. Today this
event, begun by only a few, is observed by mil
lions throughout the United States.

Grubbs earns SIAC honor

University Wildcats defeat
ed Morehouse College
16-15 in Atlanta. For the
second week in a row, a
member of the Wildcats
