FERRERA
Watch for her at the Emmy Awards next week
end (though you may not recognize her as her
beautiful self). It will be a travesty if she doesn’t
win as best actress in a comedy.

Griffin Dunne has done it
all acting, producing and
directing. The latter is his
favorite because it lets him i
"pull in the greatest hits of I
ail the other occupations," he fl
tells us. "I get to draw from ■
all my experiences when I I
direct." His movie. Fierce I
People, also let him draw I
from real-life experiences. 1
ft's a coming-of-age story focused on a mother
(played by Diane Lane) and son who retreat
from New York City to a wealthy country-dub H
town in New Jersey. There, they discover many
things, induding betrayal, love and heartbreak. "Your
first love will always be the most intense and memo
rable,'says Dunne, son of writer Dominick Dunne. "I defi
nitely took things from my own life."
Q, Why is Stone Phillips leaving
* Dateline ? Where is he going now?
Kathy Kibbey, Scottsdale. Ariz.
NBC opted not to renew Phillips’
contract for Dateline, reportedly in
an attempt to reduce costs. Phillips,
52, whose contract expired at the end
of June, had anchored the show for
15 years. Cutting Phillips’ salary frees
up about $7 million per year for the
network, which hasn’t hired an official replacement for
him. At press time, Phillips had not signed on with any
other network.

Parry, left, and Stroud make survival fun to watch.
Les Stroud and Bruce Parry are experts in survival,
but they go about it differently: Stroud tries to get out,
while Parry tries to blend in. Their shows, on Fridays at
9 p.m. and 10 p.m.-ET on the Discovery Channel, take us
to some of the most remote places on Earth. On Survi
vorman. Stroud roughs it no food, water or camera
crew— for a week. This season he contends with places
such as the Amazon jungle, where he was chased by a
jaguar; "It's like l m just playing in a fort when I was
younger, except now I don't have to go home at night,"
Stroud tells us. On Going Tribal, Parry spends a month
with isolated tribes. He follows native customs, even if
it means drinking reindeer blood." For us, this is a test Of
survival," he says, "but for them, this is just normal life."
