She attended Georgia College

answering service in Melbourne,
Florida before moving to Houston
Co'unty in 1969.
She was also a longtime mem
ber of the Beltista Club of Perry,

pride.
Disinclined to blow his own
horn, McMichael manages
to sing the praises of County
Public Works Director
Tommy Stalnaker and
County Administrator Steve
Engel throughout the inter
view. Asked about his role
models, he talks about Harry
S. Truman as an underdog
who took over the presidency
at a point of crisis, and was
famous for the sign on his
desk that said, “The buck
stops here.”
Then he adds that his hard
working father, who iived- to

McMichael is one of the
leaders, Georgia’s Speaker of
the House Glenn Richardson
is going to have to work with
on any plan for tax reform,
and right now Richardson’s
controversial HB9OO, which
would abolish property taxes
in favor of a broader appli
cation of the sales tax, is
getting a raised eyebrow
from McMichael, who seems
determined to ask the hard
questions while being diplo
matic.
“I admire the speaker for
taking a position on the ad
valorem tax,” he says diplo
matically, noting that some
kind of tax reform is in order,
“but it bothers me the most
that it would take the control
of the revenue stream away
from the counties, the cit

You have 159 counties in the
state of Georgia and every
one of them is a little big
different. One size doesn’t
fit all.”
McMichael frankly doubts
