HOUSTON HOME JOURNAL HoCo sweeps at Luella Demonettes one match shy of perfect Special to the Journal The Houston County High volleyball team continued its season last week playing Tuesday against Northside and Jonesboro High School at Northside. The Lady Bears split the tri-match dropping to Jonesboro but rebounding to defeat the host Lady Eagles. The team then played Saturday, traveling to Luella High School in Henry County to play Area 2-AAAAA rivals Luella, Union Grove and Mundy’s Mill. The Lady Bears started the day by playing Luella High School. They won in three games with scores of 25-19, 22- 25 and 25-21. Coach Jones commented, “After struggling to hit our serving spots on Tuesday,” said head coach Tony Jones, “we spent the week working on that in practice and it paid off in this match.” In the second match against defending Area 2-AAAAA Champions Union Grove (it defeat ed the Lady Bears in the Area Championship last season). The Lady Bears won the rematch, however, 2-1. Game scores for the match were 25-20, 18-25 and 25-17. “After the area finals last year,” Jones said, “the girls and I could not wait to get our next shot at Union Grove. The girls refused to lose and were the most focused I have seen them. Morgan (Hollars) and Cat (Catherine Goodman) were huge emotional leaders on the floor. “Coach (Maria) Huelsman (the Lady Bears’ assistant coach) noticed a weakness with their middle hitter and drew a play to block here and Adrienne Pate got two big blocks and that was all we needed to take their middle hitter out of the game. That meant they were only attacking from one direction and we were able to handle that.” In the third match the Lady Bears played Mundy’s Mill out of Clayton County. The Lady Bears only needed two games to win the match with scores of 25-13 and 25-16. “After some confusion at the start (Mundy’s Mill was out of rotation twice in the first two points and an off-court issue with one of the Mundy’s Mill scorekeepers),” Jones said, “the girls settled in and handled them. She always makes solid contact and always scores runs when we have runners in scoring position.” Sarah Ling added two run scoring hits for the Bears. Her double brought in Kourtny Thomas in what was a three run opening inning overall for the home team. Tift County had eight hits, and two (almost three) of those cleared the outfield fence. Blue Devil catcher Kiysten Mangham homered in the top of the second for Tift’s first run (3-1). Houston followed with another three-spot in the home second on four hits, including a leadoff single for freshman Katie Kratz. April Collins executed the sacrifice bunt, and then Danielle Burkett sin gled for her second straight hit. Crawford held Kratz to third base, but Burkett took second as Tift threw the ball towards home. Kaitlyn Carriker drew a walk to load the bases. Ashlee Burkett kept the ball in the park - and on the ground - with a single up the middle, but still drove in two more runs. Tift made a pitching change, and Houston would only get three hits the rest of the game against the new thrower. Ling had one of the hits, which brought Carriker home for the 6-1 lead. Ashlee Burkett had hits in both the fourth and sixth inning, her sixth inning safety coming after Tift turned a double play. Three of the first four Tift batters in the top of the third had hits, but there were no runs as Collins in left field, Thomas at shortstop and Carriker at third base com bined for a relay out. With two outs, Rebecca Johnson completed the whole day’s scoring with a three-run home run deep to left. Tift’s biggest chance to tie the game came in the fifth, but the visitors hurt them selves with an obstruction call on a sacrifice bunt. The Lady Bears are in Area 2-AAAAA action again this weekend at Warner Robins (a date originally scheduled for Houston County but had to be moved because of the Middle George Cheer Classic cheerlead ing tournament at Houston County) playing Morrow, MLK and Warner Robins. The times are 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m. Warner Robins was also at the Luella tournament with some pretty good results as well. The Demonettes started off by beating Mundy’s Mill 2-1. Mundy’s Mill won the first game 25-20 but Warner Robins rebounded to take game No. 2 26-24 and game three 25-23. Next, the Demonettes played and beat Luella 2-1. Luella won the first game in this one, too, 27-25, but Warner Robins came storming back with wins of 25-19 and 25-17. Finally, it was time for Union Grove, with it edging the Demonettes 2-0. If Warner Robins could have gotten past the first game - unlike in the other two cases - things might have been different. But, it lost 25-23 and then fell 25-14. Singled out for their play by head coach Tracy Fendley were: Katie Hotchkiss, who had 12 aces on the day with nine kills, 10 assists, three digs and three blocks. Also, Catherine Causey had five aces, six kills and three digs, Deanna LeShoure three aces, one dig, two blocks and three kills, Aletrius Booker, 10 kills and three blocks and Symone Wilkerson, six aces, three digs and nine assists. “Overall the team played well on Saturday,” Fendley said. “We got behind early in the matches against Mundy’s Mill and Luella, but the girl’s showed a lot of heart and fought back to win both matches.” The team is currently 4-2. if ~ f 3 ® SjSf'*® Ifffg 'ijyvii ini’ i 1 w v fIH Jhß J ENI/Gary Harmon Houston County third baseman Kaitlyn Carriker tags a Tift County player during the Lady Bears’ game against the Lady Blue Devils Monday at Houston County.
