A cataract is a clouding of the lens
in the eye that affects vision. Cataracts
are a common cause of decreased
vision. Cataracts often take many years
to develop and do not always cause
problems in their early stages. Cataracts
usually affect both eyes but do not always
progress at the same rate. Most cataracts
are related to aging. Other factors that
may contribute to cataracts include:
trauma, glaucoma, diabetes, some
medications, exposure to ultraviolet
light, infections, nutritional deficiencies,
genetic factors and smoking.

The most frequent symptom of a
cataract is blurry or dimmed vision.
Other symptoms are:
• Colors seem faded.
• Glare - headlight, lamps, or sunlight
may appear too bright. A halo may
appear around lights.
• Poor night vision
• Double vision or multiple images in
one eye.
• Frequent prescription changes in
your eyeglasses or contact lenses.
These symptoms also can be a sign of
other eye problems. If you have any of
these symptoms, check with your eye
care professional.
If you have cataracts, periodic eye

will help you and your
doctor make a decision
about the need for cataract
surgery. Much of the decision
to have surgery is based on how
much you feel the cataracts are
interfering with your quality of
life.
During a cataract evaluatibn questions
about your health and family history will
be asked. This is important because it
can help your doctor rule out other vision
problems. Always provide the doctor
with a current list of medication. Your
vision will be tested to establish how
well you see. Remember to bring along
any glasses or contacts that you wear.
Measurements are done to establish
response to glare and to determine
the power of the synthetic lens (Intra
ocular lens) used to replace the cloudy
lens (cataract) during cataract surgery.
Drops will be used to dilate your pupils
to allow the doctor to examine the
health of the entire eye. The doctor will
discuss your options and help you reach
the right decision for surgery based on

At Eyesight Associates we have
available the newest in intraocular lens
technology. We offer Acrylic lenses
with filters to help protect the back of
the eye. We also offer “high definition”
lenses that are designed to improve your
ability to drive at night. In the past after
cataract surgery, the eye saw either near
or distance, but not both. Now we offer
lenses that perform like a “bi-focal”
inside of the eye and provide adequate
vision for reading and driving out of
the same eye! Lenses that help correct
astigmatism are also available. After
cataract surgery, your vision may be
better than ever.
