Perry-SW postponed; Peach edges Lady Panthers
By MA TTHEW BROWN
Journal Sports Writer
Another trip to Macon for
sub-region softball, another
rainout for the Perry High
Panthers.
Coach Jeff Sans said,
after scoring five runs in
the first inning Thursday
at Southwest-Macon, Perry
made one out in the bottom
half before heavy rain fell
forcing another postpone
ment. The same thing hap
pened to the Panthers on Aug.
30 when Perry was scheduled
tq play at Northeast-Macon,
though that game was only
three outs away from being
official.
Sans said, as of Thursday,
he didn’t have a make-up
date set. The Panthers have
a non-region game back on
Macon on Monday against
Rutland High, and then
return home Tuesday for
Region 4-AAA south sub
region tilt with West Laurens
High.
Perry has been trying to
get back on the winning
track after falling at home
Tuesday to sub-region rival
Peach County High 3-2.
“We are struggling to win
close games,” said Sans,
whose team dropped to 3-2
in the sub-region. “If we can

In that Tuesday game,
Peach County broke a 2-2
tie in the top of the sixth on
two hits, including a lead
off single by Nikki Harris.
Sans made a change at pitch
er, bringing Erica Smith to
the circle. Peach went for
the sacrifice and got it from
Courtney Clark, but Smith
got a swinging third strike
for the second out.
Megan Keene would deliver
for the visiting Trojans with
a slap hit past the infield
into centerfield. Smith cut
off the throw home and
threw Keene out at second
base, but Peach’s go-ahead
run had already touched the
plate.
Perry had three hits in the
last two innings, but could
not push the tying run across.
KeKe Sullivan and Ashton
Jones had solid back-to-back
hits in the sixth, but Peach
got Blake Ford’s bunt and
successfully - though close
- had a force out at third.
Two shallow flyouts would
follow.

Rain ends WF’s trip
at Deerfield-Windsor
By MATTHEW BROWN
Journal Sports Writer
Westfield’s softball Hornets went to Deerfield-Windsor
Thursday with a 2-0 Region 3-AAA record and returned
from the Albany trip ... with a 2-0 region record.
The Hornets and the Knights were battling in a
scoreless tie when, in the fourth inning, play was halted
due to lightning. The game was stopped altogether and
suspended with a completion date set for Oct. 3.
Westfield already has one suspended game to com
plete cn Oct. 2 when Tattnall Square Academy visits
Perry. The two teams will finish a game that was
stopped in Macon on Aug. 27, and then play a regularly,
scheduled full game.
The Hornets went to Albany riding a string of four
straight shutout wins. Two of those shutouts account
for the team’s 2-0 3-AAA record, first against Deerfield-
Windsor at home on Sept. 4 and the second against
Southland at home on Tuesday.
Kelsey Gilliam threw her third straight complete
game shutout Tuesday when the Hornets topped the
Southland Raiders 1-0. This was a three-hitter for
Gilliam, who didn’t allow a runner to reach third base.
She struck out seven while issuing no walks.
The only time Southland had multiple runners on
base in one inning was on two first-pitch singles in
the top of the second. But Gilliam struck out two in
between the hits and got a flyout to center to end it.
Westfield scored the lone run it would need in the
home first. The Hornet offense had five hits in the
game, two coming in the first. But it started with a
walk to Mason Moreland. Jamie Marshall followed with
the first of her two hits, and then, with one out, Audrey
Clearman hit a ball off the Raider pitcher that brought
Moreland home.
The Hornets are next set to play a non-region home
game against John Milledge on Monday.
• In the Sept. 12 Home Journal, Gilliam’s pitching
numbers were inadvertently switched in a story about
Westfield’s game with George Walton on Sept. 8. In that
game, Gilliam pitched a shutout with five strikeouts
and no walks allowed.
Lady Eagle volleyballers win 2-of-3
From staff reports
There was no word from Thursday, but Northside’s
Lady Eagles volleyball squad traveled to Dutchtown
for a competition featuring four schools: Lee County,
Americus, Dutchtown, and of course Northside.
Of those, the Lady Eagles were able to beat two of the
three. They fell to Lee County 2-0 to open but then beat
Americus 2-0 and Dutchtown by the same margin.
Against the Lady Trojans of Lee County, Northside
fell 25-16 in the first game and 25-22 in the second.
Against Americus, the Lady Eagles won 25-17 and by
the same exact score in game two.
Finally, versus the Lady Bulldogs, Northside had
little trouble, winning 25-12 and 25-14.
