Ehrler, Smith to contend for public links title

Richard Ehrler of Warner Robins
and Keli Smith are among the 144 golf
ers listed to contend in the 19th annual
Georgia Public Links Championship,
which takes place today and Sunday
at the Trophy Club of Apalachee in
Dacula. Competitors will be competing
over 36 holes of flighted stroke play.
Ehrler will be competing in the
Championship Flight and Smith the
Fifth Flight.
Entries were open to male amateur
golfers who are Georgia residents and
members of a GSGA Member Club that

is open to public play.
The 72 players with the lowest USGA
Handicap Indexes make up the cham
pionship flight and the remaining 72
entrants were drawn by lottery and
flighted.
The Georgia Public Links
Championship began in 1989 and was
first won by Allen Doyle, the six-time
Georgia Amateur champion who is
now a member of the Champions Tour
and two-time U.S. Senior Open cham
pion.
This is the 19th playing of the event
and the first time that it has been con
tested at Trophy Club of Apalachee.

Only four competitors have ever cap
tured multiple titles.
David Potts of Commerce won the
Public Links in 1994 and 1995, Jack
Larkin of Atlanta won in 1996 and
2001 and Calhoun’s Brent Sizemore
took home the trophy in 1998 and 1999.
Dave Womack of McDonough claimed
his victories in 2003 and 2005.
Trophy Club of Apalachee will play
at 6,465 yards and a par 70 for the
Championship through fifth flights.
Anyone playing from the longer tees is
eligible for the overall title. The sixth
flight will play at 6,285 yards and a
par 70.
