More pointers on pears
Last week I promised to give you some
more pointers on pears, so here goes.
Question: Do pears have a chill
requirement like peaches and other
fruit?
Answer: Yes. To produce good crops, most
European pears, such as Bartlett, need at
least 600 hours of winter chill (45 degrees
or lower). Most will do better with 900
hours. There are, however, a number of low
chill pears that do quite well in the middle
Georgia area, including ‘Ayers’, ‘Baldwin’,
‘Kieffer’, and ‘Warren’. Asian pears, those
crunchy, hard-fleshed types, have a lower

1997, the winner of this

Why did the schools drop
the tradition in 1998?
’They're not bad,

«f I hey’re not bad, they’re
just boys.” Have you
JL ever heard that com
ment before? I’ve heard it many
times, mostly from the boys’ grand
mothers or from people who have
never had the pleasure of spending
a great deal of time with my boys.
No, my boys aren’t bad, they were
just being boys when they sprayed
“Windex” on the tile floor right
before I walked into the kitchen,
causing me to promptly slide across
the room on my backside.
No, my boys aren’t bad, they were just being boys
when they approached the bartender at a wedding
reception and requested “Bud Light”. They were still
just being boys when the bartender refused to serve
them and they told him that they were not underage,
they were just “little people” and had left their I.D.’s
at home.
No, my boys aren’t bad, they were just being boys
when they pulled out each other’s teeth with needle
nose pliers so they could get more money from the
tooth fairy.
No, my boys aren’t bad, they were just being boys
when they lit firecrackers and threw them out of their
second floor bedroom window, onto the grass below,
just at the exact time I was cutting that very same
grass with the lawnmower.
No, my boys aren’t bad, they were just being boys
when they “made sparks” by plugging in the battery
charger and holding the negative and positive clamps
together, thus making them scream with laughter.
No, my boys aren’t bad, they were just being boys
when they found a dead mouse in the garage, put
it in the van and then forgot about it for several
days. After awhile, the odor was quite bad, so again,

NewtonA Pottery - a Southern classic
One of the most valuable and sought
after art pottery collectibles is Newcomb
Pottery.
There is a very interesting history behind
this company that exhibited its wares
throughout the U.S. and Europe.
Heavily influenced by the Arts and Crafts
movement that started in England, this
beautiful art pottery had already distin
guished itself with more than seven medals
by 1916 that were won from various inter
national exhibitions.
Founded in 1895, Sophie Newcomb College
in New Orleans was a women,s college that
was gifted with a huge donation in 1886
